The olympics are worldwide so it would be one of the best ways to settle the differences. It would also create competition because they were both in first and second place in the medals anyway. The USSR might want to improve the amount of gold medals they earned since the US was the only thing standing in the way of being #1. Lastly I think since its so broad and it only happens every few years (depending on what olympic) they know they can improve in the future. The United states won 1061 gold medals in the olympics and that is way more then the second place (soviet union) with 440 medals. Next the rivalry between the united states and soviet union seems to be continuing. Like before they are in first and second place with the amount of medals. Lastly they are not similar because its not as intense.
