"In May 2015, she and her expedition team ventured to Henderson Island. The island is only 14 square miles. By comparison, the island of Manhattan is 22 square miles."

These numbers are important because they gives us a size comparison, they show us exactly how large Henderson Island is. Reading the other paragraphs along with this one gives us a visual about the trash amount on Henderson island. -Jacob

"The majority of plastic we come across cannot be recycled – we find it everywhere, in our waste stream, on our land," Mbata said. "When it is buried, it contaminates our soil. Whatever cannot be recycled must not be produced."

I think this quote is important because it summarizes the plastic problem in short terms (plastic is everywhere, it hurts the environment). It also includes a partial solution to the plastic problem. Without this quote, the article wouldn't mention anything about how plastic contaminates the soil, it would also one of the solutions to the problem. -Jacob
