I became associated with the American Colonization Society, it was an organization that thought free blacks should move to a territory in the west coast of Africa. At first, the society seemed like they wanted to promote the freedom and happiness of blacks, but quickly I realized most members had no wish to help and free slaves, they just wanted less free blacks in the country. I rejected them, and started working on my newspaper.

I also believed that women should be able to participate in the Anti-Slavery Society, as well as the abolition movement itself. I believed that the Constitution was a pro-slavery document, but that led to a rift in the Society, causing the creation of two more organizations: The Liberty Party (which was a political organization), and the American and Foreign Anti-Slavery society (which didn't allow women to participate.)
