We're planning on getting around 2-3 more plants to fill up space in our tank. Since our tree doesn't provide much cover for the fish, they may feel safer with more vegetation.

Common Name: Molly

Scientific Name: Poecilia sphenops

Description: Most mollies grow to about 3-4 inches, but sailfin mollies can reach up to 6 inches. They are generally peaceful community fish, but males can sometimes be territorial near limited female count. Unlike many fish, mollies give birth to live fry instead of laying eggs. Females can even store sperm and produce multiple batches of fry from a single mating.

Origin: Native to Central and South America, found in rivers, streams, and coastal waters.

Food Requirements: Fishwater flakes, optimally spirulina flakes (Naturally, they eat algae, bloodworms, etc.)

Aquarium Update 9/9

pH: 7.6

High range pH:

Ammonia .25 ppm

Nitrite: 0 ppm

Nitrate: 0 ppm

These water test levels are important because they show if the aquarium environment is safe for fish. A pH of 7.6 means the water is slightly basic but stable, which is healthy for most freshwater fish, while the high-range pH confirms it’s not too alkaline. Ammonia at 0.25 ppm is a concern because even small amounts are toxic and can burn fish gills, so it should be reduced to 0 ppm. Nitrite at 0 ppm is good because nitrite is also toxic and blocks oxygen in fish blood, and having none shows your biological filter is working. Nitrate at 0 ppm means there’s little buildup of waste, which is safe since high nitrate can stress fish and cause algae. Overall, these levels help monitor the nitrogen cycle and keep fish healthy.

If the ammonia is good for the next 2 days, we can finally put in our fish (we also chose an extra plant today).
