The setting is mostly in places in the house of King Midas, like the garden. For example, in the story it states, "He had planted a garden, in which grew the biggest and beautifulest and sweetest roses that any mortal ever saw or smelt." (Paragraph 3).

Theme

The theme of the text is: Don't be greedy, and enjoy the things in life. This theme is seen through all of the characters, since King Midas is very greedy for gold, so the stranger grants a wish from King Midas, which the relationship with the person he loves most; his daughter Marygold. Greed is a dangerous trait to have, as seen in the story when King Midas turns his daughter into gold by accident "Alas, what had he done? How fatal was the gift which the stranger bestowed! The moment the lips of Midas touched Marygold’s forehead, a change had taken place. Her sweet, rosy face, so full of affection as it had been, assumed a glittering yellow color, with yellow tear-drops congealing on her cheeks. Her beautiful brown ringlets took the same tint. Her soft and tender little form grew hard and inflexible within her father’s encircling arms. Oh, terrible " (Paragraph 62). The theme isn't too complex to understand, seeing as greed, or the everlasting desire to want something, could lead to the destruction of many things, if you do anything to receive that desire, such as the relationship between King Midas and his daughter.
