What I study: I primarily study RNA biochemistry and microbial gene regulation, but recently my colleagues and I have been collaborating to study microbial communities in coal mine waste remediation systems. The acidic, iron-contaminated run-off from these mines breeds iron-oxidizing bacteria that help precipitate metal pollution from the water.
