I've learnt some facts about the history of guadeloupe today, especially that slavery was still existent 50 years ago.

My favorite picture of the day is that of the beautiful outdoor classroom we were using today.

My Favoriten picture is the beautiful classroom which I wish for my students and me. I was very surprised about the late end of the slavery in Guadeloupe, because I knew that the abolition was in 1848 in Continental France.

My favourite pic of today is the photo during the lunch, when all of us brought delicious meals and we were talking and eating together.
Also for me was really interesting that the slavery finished 50 years ago.

I have many connections to France, its culture, and its history, but until now I knew no more about Guadeloupe than that it was a former French colony and is now an oversea department. That's why today was ashamed of our white ancestors once again... I am infinitely grateful for the path that today's Europe has taken.

My favorite photo is the one of our shared table. For me, preparing a delicious meal is the most beautiful way to show appreciation to someone. A table where various dishes are served invites to exchange. Each dish has a story to tell, and so, starting from a "simple" meal, you can delve deep into the history of its origin and learn a lot about the people who prepared it.

Today was a pretty new experience for me as I met people who impressed me by their uniqueness and interests, I look forward to getting to know them better. Last, but not least, food tasting was amazing. I was also fascinated by the history of the island. Its origin, volcanic eruption activity lasting till present times and geological history of each of the “butterfly wings”. I chose the ocean as a photo, because it reminds me that behind all the beautiful things we can see, there can be something very difficult, such as the history of slavery on the island, where people could perceive the beauty of their home in a different way than we can see it.

Before the course start I didn´t know what to expect, what people I would meet, what environment I could face.

I was absolutely fascinated by each side of the first day. Just from the beginning I could feel the unique environment, palms and other plant species growing all around providing shadow, or scattered tables, chairs, sofas to choose any, sit and relax. Course colleagues of various cultural backgrounds, most of them the Germans and we, the Czechs 😊 who actually live quite close to one another, share borders, but meet in an exotic country, in the training course, A Classroom with a Door to the World, held in one of the Caribbean island, Guadeloupe, that was absolutely unknown country for me some months ago. One can understand that Comenius ´saying “School by Play” accompanied by peace and calm is really possible if all the players share the same idea.

Really difficult to chose what I learnt today as there were so many things I was impressed by. As a lecturer of cultural and natural heritage interpretation, having launched URSUS Science Environmental Centre where our team promotes “learning by doing”, educating in exteriors most of the time, such as garden, meadow, forest, river, wetland, the classroom environment of the first day we were surrounded by reminds me the one we teach in, but in absolutely different weather conditions 😊. Walking in the sun and feeling sand under the bare feet, letting the air refresh our faces, talking to colleagues and watching the sea splashing the palm roots is one of many moments I will bear in mind forever. Another moment being impressed by were the facts I got to know about the geological origin of the island amplified by the incredible and incomprehensible facts and data about the conquest of the island by Columbus what made me feel frustrated.

Despite this fact I am eager to getting to know more.

My favourite picture of the day shows the great classroom offered to us during our stay in Guadeloupe. I think I wasnt the only one expecting that the lessons would take place in a common classroom and I really liked it to learn that a classroom could be everything, learning can take place everywhere. Thats a concept we should try to adapt here and there in school with our students.
The learning content that impressed me most today was - like for others - the special history of slavery in Guadeloupe Island and how it ended. I wouldnt have expected that there are islands in which slavery continued so many years after the oficial abolition and I think without coming to Guadeloupe and without participating in this course, I would never have learnt about it.

My favourite picture of today shows that life is a journey and every conversation can have an impact on your mind!

For me it was very interesting too that the slavery stopped 50 yesrs ago based on a coincidence!

I learned that Guadeloupe culture is very different from mainland France.
I was amazed by the fact that slavery continued on the island for a very long time.
The fact that the personal identity is similar to that of the other participants makes me look forward to more great moments with the group.

Today I learned a lot about how inspiring teaching outside the classroom can be. It was just a wonderful place - it was exciting to learn how national identity shapes us and how these differences also connect us. The common meal was exciting and also very delicious.
In the evening around half past 11, we were at the beach 🏝️ it was really a beautiful sight and we met nice people playing beach volleyball in the midnight.

I have realised again that you don't need a classroom with 4 walls to learn/experience something.
The short history of Guadeloupe was also new to me as well the fact that slavery went on unofficially until the 20th century.

I chose this picture because I am always inspired by nature and wonderful views and therefore this is the ideal place for me to learn. I will try to promote more outdoor learning when I’m back in Germany.
