The Use of Class Time

I was able to spend 45 minutes in the classroom before the class broke for lunch. Once the bell rang for the period to begin, Mr. Brody started immediately. He asked all students to take their seats, and pull out their reading that they had in their notebooks. the class worked the whole time on their reading, in which the students and Mr. Brody took turns reading. They read "The Highway Man", a classic in middle school literature. Once the reading was done, the students were given a half sheet of questions to discuss in groups about the reading. They also went over their unit vocabulary. Zero time was wasted in the class period, and students were engaged.

How was the Time Spent?

Most of the time in the classroom was spent reading and discussing in small groups. Their seemed to be an even amount of work done in small groups, in a large group, and independently. Mr. Brody did not lecture the entire class period, but he did monitor the whole time when students were doing group or independent work. Since it was only 45 minutes from the start of the period before lunch, the course of the day was consistent and productive.

What type of class was this?

The class I observed was a regular academic english classroom. the students were challenged to their ability. Their is a teacher assistant named Mr. D who is the SPED teacher. He helps those that need aid in their work, but also helps keep classroom management. Two students leave the classroom periodically to go to a more exclusive classroom for SPED.

What was the First day like?

The first day was different than I expected! I arrived earlier than usual, and Mr. Body invited me in to sit before one of his classes ended. The demographic of the class was mostly African -American and Hispanic students. In fact, the majority of the school is minority students. It is a refreshing sight to see. There was not enough time for me and Mr. Brody to chat before his next class started, but we did introduce ourselves briefly. He suggested that I just sit in the classroom to observe for the day. I did not get introduced to the class, but several students asked me who I was. I observed from the back of the class, and paid attention to Mr. Brody's teaching style. The class was a little unfocused, and lots of students take the liberty to get up in the middle of class. Mr. D, the SPED teacher, addresses this quickly. After the group and seat work was complete, the students were assigned to write a spooky story in 10 minutes, and we read them outside under an oak tree. It was cloudy and chilly outside-perfect for a spooky story. I listened in on one of the groups that read their stories to one another, and interacted with some sweet girls. The period ended quickly, and they went to lunch. I am hoping to have more invitations to interact with the students!
