         <title>The First Anesthesia Machine</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1912, a dentist named Dr. J. Heidbrink patented the first anesthetized gas machine, which allowed for controlled flow of both nitrous oxide and oxygen to patients to perform surgery.          <title>The First Use of Nitrous Oxide for Anesthesia</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1844, Horace Wells was the first to suggest the use of nitrous oxide in dentistry. The artifact down below shows the scene of a patient getting his tooth extracted with the use of nitrous oxide for anesthesia. <br>He pursued using nitrous oxide to reduce pain during tooth extraction when he observed a person who was under the influence of nitrous oxide and injured his legs and only felt pain when the nitrous oxide wore off.          <title>A Demonstration the Changed Modern Medicine</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1846 at Massachusetts General Hospital, a demonstration was performed that would change medicine for the rest of time. <br>In what they now call the Ether Dome (the surgical amphitheater), the first public surgery was performed with the use of ether as an anesthetic.<sup>1</sup> The artifact down below is a picture drawn of the assembly that took place that day. <sup><br></sup>William Morton administered the ether while Dr. John Collins Warren performs the surgery. The patient went through the whole procedure without pain.          <title>Self Trials with a New Anesthetic</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Sir James Young Simpson, who was a obstetrician, conducted self trials with a new gas called cholorform. <br>In 1847, he decided to inhale the new material to see it's effects. At first, his mood changed to one of cheer and humour, but he then found himself unconcious til the next morning.<sup>1</sup> He then knew that this substance could be used as an anaesthetic. The artifact below depicts the scene of this self trial.&nbsp;<br>We know now that his self trail was purely luck and if he inhaled too much, he would have died.&nbsp;<br>Following his self trials, he used chloroform as anesthetic in many of his patients during childbirth and labor to relieve them of pain.&nbsp;<br>Source 1: http://scihi.org/james-young-simpson/<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>A Device for Administration</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Around the 1860s, masks were used for administering gasses like chloroform and ether in a way that would not harm the patient. This technique started to be used during the Civil War.&nbsp;<br>The artifact below explains how and why these masks were used to administer anesthetic.          <description><![CDATA[<div>This artifact takes us on a step-by-step walkthrough of the administration of modern-day anesthesia with general anesthetic. In this video, the gas is a mixture of propofol and lidocaine, which help mediate consciousness and pain control in order for the doctor to perform the procedure.<sup>1</sup><br>They also use a neuromuscular blocker to prevent the patient from moving during the procedure.
