Our focus shifted to valuing traditional knowledge to propose housing solutions that are more accessible, humane, and intrinsically connected to the environment.

From the beginning, the project challenged us to expand the concept of sustainability, integrating the social and economic pillars with the environmental aspect. Classroom reflections, specialized readings, and field observations were pillars for developing a critical and comprehensive vision of the possibilities of vernacular architecture.

🏠 ÔKA Arquitetura e Construção (whose Tupi name means “house, shelter, home”) was born from our concern about the environmental impact of the construction industry. The traditional model is responsible for a large share of urban solid waste and high CO₂ emissions. Our central challenge was to recover the ancestral wisdom of Vernacular Architecture — which uses local materials and techniques, adapted to the climate, such as raw earth and plant fibers — to create sustainable and affordable projects. ÔKA proposes a reverse path, adopting bioconstruction to foster social belonging and to prove that it is possible to build with culture at the center and the environment as a priority.

We met with Zuza, leader of the Land Struggle Movement (MLT) and coordinator of the Baixa Verde Settlement. He shared the community’s trajectory, which began with the occupation organized by the MLT in 2008. Since then, the struggle for territorial permanence has been ongoing, alongside the development of a community-based and sustainable agroecological production system.

Zuza described the families that would benefit from the project and their infrastructure needs. He emphasized that the survival of the settlement is threatened by the constant pressure of large corporations that, using financial and legal power, attempt to commodify the land. We analyzed this dynamic as a contemporary form of capitalist colonization. The settlement’s resistance demands collective strategies to confront established powers, offering our project a fundamental social and political perspective.

🌱 To deepen the discussion, we sought references that connect social struggle and construction. The works of Nêgo Bispo (“A Terra Dá a Terra Quer”) and Tamiris Volcean (“Mulheres Assentadas”) provided us with the foundation to understand the identity-based relationship with dwelling. We complemented this with a technical visit to Trancoso, which brought us complex reflections:

At the Mont Horebe project, we observed the first stages of construction, including the layout for the foundation, the ground beams, and the beginning of masonry with ceramic blocks. This stage was valuable for gaining theoretical knowledge about the standard construction process, confronting the theory of bioconstruction with the practice of the high-end market.

Critical Reflection: We realized that, in many high-end constructions in the region, vernacular architecture is applied selectively. This was evident while walking through the streets of Trancoso, in the surroundings of the famous “Quadrado.” The imagery and aesthetics — such as the use of reclaimed wood and rustic roofing — sell an image of “integration with the village environment,” but this application often disregards the social pillar and accessibility, reducing the technique to a mere aesthetic resource of luxury.

Visita 1 (08/05/2025) – Imersão e Análise de Desafios: Fomos calorosamente acolhidos por Zuza e outros moradores com um generoso café da manhã, seguindo a tradição de fartura local, com destaque para o aipim, cultura fundamental desde a fundação do assentamento. Zuza nos mostrou as construções pioneiras, explicando o forte senso de comunidade e a história da luta pela terra. A visita permitiu uma análise crítica dos desafios ambientais e de infraestrutura: observamos o cemitério local e o rio, que se encontra poluído devido às ações da empresa vizinha. Conhecemos a roça (fonte de sustento e autossuficiência) e examinamos de perto os sistemas de abastecimento hídrico e tratamento de efluentes. Notamos que alguns moradores possuíam seu próprio poço artesiano, compartilhado com vizinhos, e que a construção de uma fossa séptica já era uma realidade para parte da comunidade, o que nos deixou satisfeitos com a consciência ambiental local. Contudo, essa solução não era universal, visto que alguns ainda utilizavam a fossa negra. Com o nosso projeto, buscamos simplificar e demonstrar a viabilidade da fossa séptica para que se torne uma prática comum. Essa imersão foi vital para compreender os hábitos e necessidades da comunidade, garantindo a coesão do nosso projeto;

(Nêgo Bispo, A Terra Dá a Terra Quer)

🗺️ The Assentamento Baixa Verde became our central case study, with two essential visits for data collection and for humanizing the project.

Visit 1 (05/08/2025) – Immersion and Challenge Analysis: We were warmly welcomed by Zuza and other residents with a generous breakfast, following the local tradition of abundance, with cassava (aipim) standing out as a fundamental crop since the founding of the settlement. Zuza showed us the pioneer constructions, explaining the strong sense of community and the history of the struggle for land. The visit allowed for a critical analysis of environmental and infrastructure challenges: we observed the local cemetery and the river, which is polluted due to the actions of a neighboring company. We visited the crops (the source of livelihood and self-sufficiency) and examined in detail the water supply and wastewater treatment systems. We noticed that some residents had their own artesian well, shared with neighbors, and that the construction of a septic tank was already a reality for part of the community, which made us satisfied with the local environmental awareness. However, this solution was not universal, as some still used black pits (fossa negra). With our project, we seek to simplify and demonstrate the feasibility of septic tanks so that they may become a common practice. This immersion was vital to understanding the habits and needs of the community, ensuring the cohesion of our project.

Visit 2 (07/10/2025) – Client Interview and Technical Rigor: The second visit focused on the practical case study: the residence intended for Mrs. Rosineide Santana (“Pastora”). We were welcomed into her home with the warm local custom, enjoying another generous breakfast with freshly harvested cassava from her field. Through a detailed interview, we gathered her desires and needs for the new house, guiding the project to integrate vernacular architecture with her personal wishes and cultural context. Then, we carried out the technical field stage: we took measurements, recorded the geographic coordinates of the future house site, as well as the coordinates of the artesian well located on a neighboring lot, which supplies our client’s house. The most important moment was the collection of soil samples from the site — an essential material for laboratory tests that will define the feasibility and technical specifications of the bioconstruction.

Critical Analysis: Disconnection and Modernization - We found that, despite the community’s rich knowledge of ancestral building techniques, most new constructions use conventional masonry. This choice is driven by the perception that vernacular techniques are associated with “backwardness” or lack of resources, favoring the adoption of more modern methods.

This cultural phenomenon is the focus of ÔKA’s critique. Our company seeks to demonstrate that vernacular methods represent bioclimatic efficiency and identity strengthening, aligned with the principle advocated by Nêgo Bispo:

“Every dwelling should be designed with local material, that is the first great issue. Every biome, every environment, every place offers us the conditions to live there.”
(Nêgo Bispo, A Terra Dá a Terra Quer)

The mission of the project is to reverse this perception, proving the value of local constructive wisdom.

We worked on Administration and Marketing, defining the Marketing Mix (4 Ps):

Product: Bioconstruction Projects and Sustainability Consulting.

Price: Focused on the Low Cost of Local Raw Materials (earth, fibers).

Place: Southern and Far-South Bahia, regions rich in vernacular knowledge.

Promotion: Appreciation of Culture, Education, and the Recovery of Ancestral Knowledge.

The greatest challenge was to reconcile the ideal theory with logistical feasibility and the scarcity of specialized labor in the region.

🗒️The Expanded Abstract, submitted to FEBRAT, synthesizes the results of the investigation. The final text articulates the concept that sustainability goes beyond the environmental dimension, encompassing the social and economic pillars. It questions “facade sustainability” — the superficial use of the term merely to meet a market trend. The observation in Trancoso served as empirical evidence for this critique, showing that vernacular aesthetics are often appropriated for luxury, distorting their original role of low cost and belonging. Vernacular architecture is presented as a comprehensive solution, yet with marketing challenges and the need to recover traditional labor in order to achieve large-scale application.

🗂️The final stage was systematization. We prepared the Logbook (this document!) and the Descriptive Memorial, which covered Planning and Construction Management (PGO). The final reflection points to the importance of certification that, in Brazil, considers the social and cultural pillar with the same weight as the environmental one. The challenge of Belonging is also highlighted, indicating the need for grassroots work so that communities recognize the cultural and functional value of vernacular techniques, and do not see them as a sign of poverty.
