Tomorrow I am leaving my old self to depart on a long journey to a distant place. Chances are I may never again return home. It is important that I bring along everything material that is important to me. This will include food and water, money, a backpack and spare clothing, a photo ID, a journal to write in, a phone and/or laptop, as well as standard survival tools such as matches, flares, a flashlight, a knife, and a gun (for hunting/self-defense). Before leaving I would be sure to say goodbye to any family and friends who are close to me. If possible I would like to say goodbye face to face, but if I believe they would be confrontational I would just send them a letter.

Persuasive Paragraph

The biggest issue in society today is that it values conformity above all else. If you have opinions that go against what the majority of society thinks, society will reject you and your opinions. You will be labeled an outcast, you will be shamed, you may lose your career, friends and family. This happens most frequently when someone airs an opinion that is deemed "inappropriate" or "politically incorrect" by society's standards. Examples of this happening can be seen on an almost daily basis if you are paying attention to the news. A recent instance of this happening is when Native American leader Nathan Philips accused a group of Trump-supporting Covington Catholic high school students of surrounding him and harassing him with racist remarks. For days this incident was all over the news and social media. Politicians, talk show hosts, singers, and other prominent figures/celebrities all publicly condemned the high school students. Millions vented their outrage on social media, causing the school to shut down due to the amount of death threats that the students received. When a few days later the video and evidence came out that Nathan Philips lied about the incident, that the teens did not say anything derogatory towards him and did not surround him, no one seemed to care. The facts did not matter in this case because the teens wore MAGA hats and so the media made them out to be the villain when the really were not. Because the teens did not conform to what all the celebrities and news outlets believe in, they were publicly defamed and their lives ruined all on the premise of a lie.

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler." (Thoreau) What Thoreau means by this quote is that you should do whatever it is that you want to do with your life. If you simply pursue your dreams, life will become simpler and easier to get through. Do not worry about what society thinks of your dreams, as long as they are not hurting anybody else you should pursue them. If you follow this path you will become much happier and your life will be much more fulfilling. You will not be distracted or stressed out about things that are unimportant to you. While following this path, you will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the universe. My dream is to live a happy and healthy life.

"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer" (Thoreau). This quote means that if someone does not follow along with the majority of people in a society, maybe he or she has opinions different than those of the majority of society. He is not following the path that was set for him by society, he is instead creating and following his own path. He or she is open to challenging authority. An example of someone who "heard a different drummer" would be Martin Luther when he stood up to the corrupt church and exposed the falsehoods preached by ministers as well as the scams that were indulgences. Because he stood up to the authority and power of the church, his life, family and friends were placed in great danger. Regardless of the risks, he publicly denounced the church and the public listened to him. He was a very courageous and righteous person

Modern Example of Transcendentalism

An example of a transcendentalist theme that may be seen in modern TV shows and movies is the importance of nature. In Game of Thrones, for example, the importance of nature is a major theme as winter is coming and people have to prepare for the hardships of winter. In this fantasy world (Westeros) the two seasons are summer and winter and they both last for years at a time. As such, people must spend all their time in the summer stockpiling food for the winter. The winter that is coming in this show is feared to be a particularly nasty winter that may last for 10 or 15 years. This theme is wildly popular and so even people who have never watched the show have likely heard someone else reference the quote "winter is coming."

Quote Visual Representation

"The sun illuminates only the eye of the man, but shines into the eye and the heart of the child." (Emerson) This quote means that when children see nature they are able to appreciate it for what it is. Adults, however, only see nature. They do not have the heart to appreciate it like the children do. Children are young and innocent and are fascinated by nature and can appreciate its natural beauty. Adults usually are not capable of this as they are too concerned about what they can build on the land. Adults look at nature and think about how they can build it and make it their own, children look at nature and are happy with how it is.

So far in my sixteen years of life living in Point Pleasant, I have not been faced with any decisions that have drastically altered my life. I believe my first major decision that I will have to make in my life will be once I graduate high school. After high school, I have to decide whats next. What college do I want to go to? This is a big decision as college these days is very expensive and what college I attend will effect how much students debts I have to pay off. During college (if I choose to go that route), I will also have to decide what degree I pursue which will determine what career I build. This ultimately will define who I am for the rest of my life.
