The reason why Cole burned down the shelter was because he was mad and upset . So much that he took it upon himself by burning down the shelter. Cole has been left alone on the island and is very angry with all of the people he felt had deserted him. His burning of the shelter is symbolic of the relationships he no longer feels attachment.

The reason why Cole carved to totem full of animals was because they each represented a dance. The dance was to help be more relaxed and not so angry all the time. Why he use animals was because everytime he saw an animal he would dance how he thought the animal would and the story behind each animal he saw made him feel better all the time. Depending on the animal that helped him. It's a way for Cole to work out his life, examining his past and carefully considering his future. Carving the totem enables Cole to really think about what he's learned so far, illuminating how he can continue to grow as a person.Throughout his carving, though, Cole leaves one space blank on his totem: the one that he's reserving for anger. It's only when he gains Peter's forgiveness that they end up carving a circle in the space for anger together—because they're both letting go of the anger that's held them back up until this point:

He swam to the island because he wanted to escape everything and to clear his head all because he took it on his anger again. He also went because he wanted to take his anger on the spirit bear he saw a while ago ( in the book).

The Stick, Cold pond, and the Ancestry rock.

The stick was to represent what Cole's patterns were and what life sometimes is. The good was on the right side while the bad was on the left. So he had to break the anger side off the stick but every time he did it was always still there. Show the goes to show that every time that Cole tries to forgive himself or is so close to it , he always ends up angry later.
The Cold pond was to help cole fight through the pain he felt and his anger about it too. It was also to release his anger and to relax.
The Ancestry rock was to go top of the hill with the rock and roll it down. But it was hard for Cole because he was so frustrated going up a steep hill with a heavy rock. But since he always thensed up , then he got to let go of his anger by letting the rock roll down the hill.
Every time he kept doing this every day , he felt more stress relief and not so angry any more. It was like a routine that Edwin and Garvey introduced and like lessons too.
