Middle Childhood Physical Development

New skills in fine and gross motor allowed me to start playing club volleyball. At this age, the corpus callosum is completing development which leads to an increase in balance, coordination, as well as an improvement in reaction time. This allowed me to improve my volleyball skills to make the team. This is included in physical development in Middle Childhood.

Middle Childhood Cognitive Development

At this age, I was doing Kumon which is a Math and Reading Center. During middle school childhood, understanding of things and complexity to follow increases. I was able to improve my reading and math skills because of my working memory and attention span improving. Vocabulary and grammar improves at this age as well, which helped me improve my reading skills.

Around this age is where self esteem is a big concepts for kids. I remember dressing up for themed christmas parties and I was very cognizant on how I looked and compared myself to my family friends. I also compared how I did things such as games and dancing to my best friend during these parties.

In early childhood, I was doing a lot of nonosocial play. In this picture my cousin and I are together but playing separately. Solitary play is when kids play and do something themselves.

Pretend play starts at 12-13 months. Around this age symbolic thinking emerges and increases. I used to love dressing up in costumes. My parents would buy me a bunch of princess dresses instead of dolls because I liked it better.

During preschool I started dancing. I used to do ballet because it was an activity at my preschool that I could do while my parents were still at work. At this age kids are supposed to be jumping, galloping, and running. At around 4-5 these skills are more controlled. I was able to do these skills while dancing.

Newborn

When I was born, I was 7.2 pounds. I was a vaginal birth but was born a couple days later than expected. I had a lot of hair and had no complications during birth. Mom was able to leave with me a night later. I was an easy baby and slept a lot.

Infancy

I had no problems sleeping at this age. I took many naps but didn't like my crib and slept with my parents. I was breastfed but started to eat solid foods around 9 months. As you can see in the picture, I was starting to be able to grasp things. I was crawling by this point and rolling over.
