~

Repetition, in a musical sense, is the repeating of a passage or note in a musical piece. The repetitive portions of a song are usually made to be catchy in order to get the audience hooked. When we listen to music, the repeated parts also keep our subconscious focused on the music so that when it changes, you immediately notice and want to hear more. I agree with Ratliff, there are 2 types of repetition: Bad repetition and good repetition. We tend to practice both of these without even noticing that were doing it. When we are feeling any negative emotion (greed, anger, selfish) we tend to do things that can become a habit. We also do this with positive emotions creating habits that we do in our daily loves to survive such as cleaning, shopping and exercising. In “We R Who We R” by Kesha, she repeats a variation of the phrase “We’re dancing like were dumb-dumb-duh-duh-duh-dumb.” This gives the audience a chance to sing it any way they want and be themselves. The breaks in the word ‘dumb’ also gives contrast in the song so that the is different throughout. "Blue Jay Way" by the Beatles also provides a short repetitive chorus that hooks the audience to get them interested in rest of the song. At the end it continuously plays the chorus, the part that people tend to like more throughtout the song.
~

"Repetition is a smart psychological operation---a way to make you focus on all that is in fact nonrepetitive. The music seems to stay put, while you (or your perceptions) change. The you stay put while it changes."
-Ratliff, Every Song Ever
Pg 14
