  •  The Maine was a very expensive ship to build that was traveling through the Havana harbor traveling to Cuba. 
  • February 15, 1898 Maine was traveling to protect American thoughts while most people thought they were just going to take a trip to Cuba.

  • The Maine put its anchor down in the harbor and the crew watched the island for any suspicious activity but 3 weeks into the watching of the island the Maine was exploded (The Story)
  • There was pre-war problems between American and Spain which made people think the spanish bombed there ship (February 16 1898).

  • The ship exploded and than sunk causing 266 deaths out of 354 people. Over half the people on the ship were killed (USS Maine).
  • People who were affected by the explosion of the Maine had been calling for the United States to kick the Spanish people out of Cuba for what they had done (The Story).

  • The call didn’t get passed which made Spain’s leaders look evil for getting away with something so harsh (The Story).
  • March 28th 1898, about a month after the explosion they discovered Maine was busted by a submerged mine which is like an underwater bomb (February 16 1898).

  • The blame wasn’t fully put on Spain yet because they came to further conclusions from research that there might have been a fire in the coal  bunker of the Maine.
  • Overall what occurred brought the United States to the Spanish American War.
