06/03/2018

Today I was assigned to draw my collection of stolen socks using at least four different methods. I managed to do so, but I did not manage to make more than four works due to time constraints. Afterwards I was tasked to register my works by photo or film in a manner which would put an additional layer of meaning to the work.
Drawings:
There were four of them, the first was a charcoal drawing of a detail of a single sock, the second was a collage inspired by the pattern on one of the socks, the third was a mock missing person poster made with a permanent marker on cardboard and the fourth was a painting/collage of a scene involving the socks.
First: Since I was using charcoal I focused on the shadows and highlights on the sock, however, even though objectively I managed to replicate the sock, I felt that the drawing was bland and did not transmit the feelings which my collection should evoke.
Second: While I was thinking of ways to represent the collection better I did this colourful collage which turned out very aesthetically pleasing due to my use of complementary colours and patterns. I was very happy with the result, however I did take a very large amount of time to complete the work, which resulted in me not having any lunch. Better planning would have resolved this issue, since I made many small mistakes which cost me a significant amount of time.
Third: The work is very simple and I was especially happy with my choice of material and the typography. The use of simple and common materials can help bring about meaning and some of them have very useful properties, like the very bold black of permanent markers and the absorbent aspect of cardboard. The simplicity of this work and the fact that it represents more an idea than a physical object made me notice that the realistic or the pretty result isn't necessarily the better one.
Fourth: I had to rush this drawing because of the amount time that I had left, next time I must plan my works before starting them to avoid making mistakes or changing my mind and having to redo things. However, even if rushed, I liked the result of my work for it was made in a very stylized manner, which isn't something that I usually do, and because my use of yellow masking tape helped make the work more interesting. Masking tape is very useful for it can be put over your drawing without much trouble and it can have very bold colors, making it an interesting resource.

Photos: I must make sure to have more time to set up my shots better. Bringing my camera to class, however, made the process of photographing my work much faster and satisfactory.

Considerations for my next works: I must not worry too much about accuracy, a drawing can represent an idea. Colours are my allies and I must not avoid using them. Planning saves time! Common materials can have very useful properties which I must not overlook. Bringing my camera to class seems to be a good idea.

05/03/2018

Activity: collection presentation and exhibition.

Collection presentation: my collection was one that required context to be understood, which was why many people thought it was strange or half-hearted before I properly explained it. This issue was partially settled in the second arrangement of the collection, in which I included contextual clues to indicate that my collection was not about the socks but the act of collecting them (I stole them).

Thoughts: if something relies heavily on context I must be sure to provide it in a practical and intuitive manner. People seemed to like the idea of me stealing the items I presented, therefore using materials from interesting or "cheeky" sources seems to be a good idea for some situations.

07/03/2018

1) Stolen by colleagues
I chose this approach of distributing my collection among the students, putting it in backpacks and pockets to make it seem like they stole the socks, therefore demonstrating the fact that the collection was composed of stolen items.
The result was unsatisfactory for I believe that one wouldn't be able to notice the collection was there in the first place unless there was some kind of explicit indication that there were socks which were stolen somewhere in the room.
2) Pedestal
I decided to display my collection on a pedestal-like structure to create a contrasting image of trivial items being put on display in a manner akin to that of precious and valuable objects. This would be a way to relay the fact that those weren't just ordinary socks, that they were the spoils of a thief.
While I believe that an interesting setting was created, the solution, although effective, was quite boring. Perhaps if I were to decorate the pedestal to make it seem more lavish and ornate the piece would be improved significantly.
3)Wearing the socks
I decided to wear the socks in ways in which they weren't supposed to be worn to indicate the versatility that I noticed that such clothing articles possess.
Perhaps if I were to cover myself completely with the socks and make accessories or utensils out of them the idea would be better relayed. However, due to time constraints and the fact that I would have to use the items later I decided not to cut or sow any of the socks, limiting drastically my options.
4) Mock plushie
I decided to simulate what a plushie made from the socks would look like because I believed that representing a little creature, supposedly the one which stole the socks, through the items themselves would be a good idea. However, due to time constraints and the fact that I did not want to cut the socks I simply simulated what the plushie would look like for register purposes.
The result lacked detail and didn't reflect my idea, however I didn't think that it would, therefore I wasn't surprised by the result.
5)Missing socks
I decided to scatter the socks across the room, hiding them in places where a careful observer would be able to find them. I solved the issue I had with the first arrangement by using a drawing I had made the day before which was a mock missing person sign representing a sock that was supposedly missing. My exhibit would then be the sign, which would point out the fact that there was a missing sock, prompting an observer to look for one.
The result was extremely satisfactory, and some of my classmates which saw the poster and weren't busy with their works actually looked for and found some of the socks, showing the reactions to the collection which I expected them to have.
6)metal woven socks
I decided to weave the socks around the metal fence in the mezanine, stretching each sock individually and vertically, ordering them by colour. I decided to use this approach because I wanted to create a dialog between the fabric of the socks and the metal weave of the fence. This created the illusion of a solid, opaque surface, and the result reminded me of some of the knitting work people sometimes do on light poles and signs on the streets of Sao Paulo.
The result was satisfactory, though I would maybe not sort by colour the next time, mixing the socks to create a more distinct pattern. It was interesting to present my collection in a manner in which its nature or source were not the focus and I was surprised that such way of presenting it could create an appealing result, especially if you consider the fact that my collection is composed of socks.
Final thoughts: Simple results can be good, especially if you have limited time. In this class I managed my time extremely well and still got satisfying and refreshing results even after many different arrangements. I believe that this was because I stuck to better solutions for the environments and resources provided. I must remember to be aware of the resources that I have and to work with them, not against them, and that includes the time that I have for my work.

08/03/2018

The printing techniques shown to us during class today seem extremely useful. I've carefully registered their respective processes in my sketchbook for future reference for it seems to me like I will be revisiting them quite often. I was especially interested in the plastic engraving technique shown for it can be used to print expressive and bold lines with a scribble-like appearance to them. The technique felt much easier than woodcut and it also allows for a better representation of volume through the use of sandpaper. I have the materials necessary to make more templates at home and I'll work on experimenting with different techniques to get more results from the plastic medium which, to me, seems to hold much potential for different engraving methods.

I also went to a lecture given by Charles Watson at EBAC today and it helped me realize that I must immerse myself more in my creative practice. The time I spend outside of EBAC must not be treated as a timeout from the work that I've been doing, but instead must be treated as an extension of my practice, a moment for pursuing thoughts or things otherwise impossible while I am at the foundation studio. This year will NOT be easy for it will bring about a big transformation in the way that I think and produce things. I am not used to many of the activities and assignments in which I've been taking part and, however exhausting or even sometimes scary it may be to face so many new problems with so many new intricacies, I must not run away from my artistic practice and evade problems for that would hinder my growth as someone who aspires to work in the creative industry.
Arduous work, constant research, immersing oneself in subjects of interest and having the courage to make mistakes over and over again and not let that bring you down. These are the things which I must pursue during my foundation course and uphold throughout my whole life.

09/03/2018
Today was the final presentation of the collector project and from it I've learnt the following:
- I must not expect to find everything that I want at the studio. If i'm not sure whether or not a certain material is available to me I must either check or bring my own just to be safe and avoid wasting time looking for workarounds.
- The diversity of the mediums I used was a great ally and helped make my work significantly more interesting.
- My collection wasn't even on display! And people liked and understood what I was presenting even better than when I had the collection physically in the room! Representation is a powerful way to create meaning, I've learned.
- The feedback I got from my classmates was very good. From it I learned that leaving things open to interpretation can be very good for it is engaging and helps you identify many more interpretations of your work.
- I put a significant amount of effort in my work and it felt very rewarding to see it finished in a satisfactory manner. I now know that, for my future works, the more effort I put in them, the more rewarding it will be to create a final product. Especially if, over time, you learn how to solve the issues which you encountered with your work at the beginning of the project (for example, the fact that I didn't know how to represent the nature of my collection).

11/03/2018

Today I worked on the research for the typography assignment.
The terms which I learned will definitely be useful when I inevitably immerse myself more on the subject, though I feel as if I want to learn more about typography in the aspects of unorthodox integration in different mediums and visual communication through non textual means.
The research I did on Saul Bass got me excited to learn more about the subject. His work is impressive and his style is worth analyzing in greater depth for its simplicity and efficiency in conveying feeling, more specifically, I feel, suspense! His works for motion pictures are also worth analyzing in greater depth but, more importantly, the applications of typography in video game design which came to my mind while I was looking at his work seem to be worth reviewing and analyzing. I will probably write up an analysis on the ones that I was reminded of in my sketchbook this coming week.

12/03/2018

Today we had two primary tasks:
1)collect through pictures visual elements resembling letters.
2)develop from one of the images collected a typeface for a single letter, both upper and lower case.
The first task started with us arranging objects from the studio in order to spell our names. I misunderstood this task and took many pictures, one of each letter, instead of a single picture of my name written with many objects. Still, to complete this task I tried looking for the basic angles an shapes of typography, circles, sharp angles and halves of circles were the shapes which composed most of the letters, therefore looking for and later rearranging them was my priority for this activity. Afterwards I had to find every single letter in the alphabet as a physical object, shadow, reflection etc. The major difference was that I could not tamper with the subjects of the pictures, therefore this task presented a greater challenge. To face it, I decided to +photograph the first manifestation of the letters which I encountered, because I wasn't able to be picky due to the time limit I had. This also made my results more interesting because I forced myself to look for solutions as fast as possible, therefore instead of moving from place to place I stayed in a single place for a long period of time and there I tried to constantly switch my perspective and patiently observe every element which was visible to me. This was more effective because I was able to look for the shapes which compose letters instead of the letters themselves, which made it so I was analysing every single letter simultaneously, keeping me from missing an opportunity because I wasn't thinking about it. This can be clearly seen in the letters A, W and N. I also made sure to keep track of the solutions I had already found to reduce redundancy, however toward the end of the activity I started getting picky about the solutions I found because I had spare time, and that almost made me unable to finish the activity.
The second major part was the development of the font. For this exercise we needed to already have the pictures of the alphabet uploaded to our reflective journal, and since almost nobody had done that we lost a significant amount of time trying to fix that. Next time I must remember to complete the tasks thoroughly, perhaps making notes will be good to make sure that I get everything right. After we uploaded our files and looked at some of them I was assigned the letter M to develop a typeface similar to the picture which I took corresponding to the letter M. Making sure my picture was clear and interesting was a good idea because it made the creation process much easier. To develop both upper and lower case letters I focused on the main quirk of the picture, the fact that the letter had one side bigger than the other. From that I made sure to establish the base line, cap height, x-height and ascender to facilitate the creation process. I started out with a pencil sketch and then drew many times over it with different proportions and pen colors to have a wide sample of possible arrangements. From the sketches I picked my favorite and reserve it as proportionately as my ruler allowed me, and then once again I drew over it making smaller changes until I found a satisfying result. Then I took that result and tested it, but this time with a calligraphy quill, and drew it many times without the guidelines until I found a shape which was satisfying and easily read. Then I drew it one final time just to be sure that it would be the one I would use. It may have been better if I tried using easier proportions to replicate, but I was very happy with the result and i didn't want to change it at all, so that will be an issue that I'll have to deal with later.

13/03/2018
The day began with us having to cut out from a sheet of paper a copy of the work that we had developed yesterday, and then use it as a stencil. Due to the fact that the letters I designed were elongated horizontally I had a hard time making them large enough in a single sheet of paper, so I rushed to cut multiple different sizes from many different sheets to have a large array of stencils I could use. The stencils I did were mostly simple, though the results were still impressive to me. The more elaborate one was made to have intentionally muted colours and the best one (picture included) was made with packaging paper and a single centralized stencil print, nothing elaborate but impressively pretty! The decision to allocate some of my time to develop more sizes was a good one, and I still had time to finish my work, though I did have to rush myself quite a bit.
The second part of the day we had to spent in the printing room. There we had to take an alternate version of our letters and separate it in two templates which would be illegible without the each other. I separated the thicker parts of my letter from the thinner parts and, when separated, you wouldn't be able to tell that the templates formed a letter, so I was successful in that aspect. However, when it came to printing, we didn't have time to print both parts and the first part I did didn't turn out very well in the most part. My favorite result was a flawed one but it was an exception. I have to get better at screen printing because the vast majority of the prints had issues. The biggest problem, however, came in the second part of this activity. Due to the fact that the second part couldn't be screen printed due to time limitations I had to take my second template and print it as a stencil. The problem was that the paper was too thin so it got warped by the paint and stuck to the roller, ripping almost in half. I then made the stencil again but due to its shape it kept getting the sheet dirty and changing the paper for a stiffer one didn't help with the warping. The results weren't perfect, but they weren't terrible either. I did one of the sheets with gouache paint just to see how it would look and I saved the best looking one for me to complete later. Next time it might be worth doing everything in screen print to get better results. Stencils are clearly less precise and more useful for artistic approaches.
Packaging paper stencil:

14/03/2018
Today I worked on developing my 3d model and a font based on the letter I developed. The 3d model development came first and for it i decided to use an idea I had had yesterday when making the screen print mask for my letter: what if, to represent Movement I made a static object held up by tension, and what if I made it like a Mast holding up a flag, a very dynamic object. So from the screen print I did of my serif version of the lower case "m" (picture below) I developed the ideas for a physical free-standing object. I also had the idea to use very light paper or fabric and tie it without too much tension on two very tensioned ropes, one on top and one on the bottom, forming with the light fabric the shape of an "M" which would flutter and change within the restrictions of the two tight ropes, which would represent the baseline and cap height of the typeface. This would also evoke the idea of movement but my classmates liked the former idea because it seemed more refined yet still synthetic.
The second part, the development of the font, did not go very well because the templates given were unable to properly house my elongated typeface and I also didn't have my pen nibs which I used earlier with me since I had left them soaking at home. Therefore, to make sure I at least referenced one of the main aspects of my typeface I used a large marker and kept it in a single position, simulating a very thick pen nib. The result wasn't bad, but was extremely different from the style I had developed earlier. The biggest problem, however, was with the website we were supposed to use to create the fonts. It did not work properly at all! I had so many issues with it that even though I finished designing my typefaces early I still had to spend an hour after the class finished to not even get my font! I decided to upload the scans to the cloud and try to finish at home because I would be late to buy the materials for the 3d model. I did not take into account the fact that leaving later meant facing more traffic and because of that the store closed before I could get there. The whole experience was terrible. If i'm still unable to finish this at home because of issues with the website I'll have to speak with Michael about getting another solution other than the one provided. The website is extremely problematic!

15/03/2018

Today I worked on the development of my 3d model. Since yesterday I had been having many different ideas for my project. The first one had many issues which I carefully registered in my sketchbook and there I also compared my ideas to select the one that was better (practical and interesting). I spent the morning simulating my different ideas until I had another idea, a mixture of all of my previous concepts which was more synthetic and elegant than all of them.
The prototype is shown in a picture below.
Since I made a wood frame at home before coming to class I wouldn't be able to finish my project in class (I would need a powerful desk drill since the wood I used is ridiculously hard) so I decided that after I figured out exactly what I would do once I got home I would work on the font assignment from yesterday which I had issues with.
Since today I had my pen nibs I was able to do what I wanted and, for a reason which I could not identify, maybe because the newer typefaces have less volume, this time I was able to build my font. Thankfully I didn't have the same issues yesterday and I managed to finish the digitalization process in less than two hours wow! Next time I develop typefaces I'll be sure to NOT use calligraphr. I wasted too much time trying to solve issues yesterday.
Important things I learned:
- The sketchbook is extremely useful for comparing, registering and developing ideas. I'm definitely going to use it without restraint.
- Always bring as much stuff to class as possible
- Finishing projects at home is ok as long as you have other stuff to do during class. It is better to do thing in class if possible since you have constant feedback from classmates and teachers.

16/03/2018
Today I did the following:
- Recorded 3d work
- Presented works developed throughout the week
From these experiences I learned that:
- As always, if possible, it's extremely useful to bring a camera to the studio.
- The photo studio is a great asset, though I must always remember that if many people want to use it, I will need to wait for them, so going there first was a good decision since I didn't have to waste time waiting for my turn.
- Setting up my works was relatively easy since I had everything ready and made sure I got a spot as soon as possible. Planning ahead and making sure I had everything done was great since I didn't have to rush myself therefore I had plenty of time to set up my things.
- The room was extremely dirty, full of clutter on the floor. It took me a good while to clear up the space which I wanted to use, perhaps I should mention this to the class reps, though I'm certain that the clutter wasn't made by foundation students.
- My classmates had very good ideas for their works. I made sure to register my favorites, maybe this will be useful later.
- One of the comments that I got the most for my work was that it looked very solid and polished. I only achieved that because I knew the materials well, planned and allocated enough time to execute my idea. This was made possible through the use of my sketchbook. I will use it MUCH more in future projects.

20/03/2018
Today I did the following:
- Developed typography based on my theme
- Developed a poster regarding my protest
I believe that my work did well to stay on its theme. One problem that I face is that my object of protest is very specific and about an unpopular subject, therefore it is not easily understood. I've been told that not everyone had to understand the entirety of the issue, I just had to make clear what I wanted. I might have managed to do that in an interesting and relatively synthetic manner. At first I had issues developing typefaces because I wanted to cram as much information as possible into my work, but that was clearly not going to work. I then decided to keep things simple, and simplified them until I reached a reasonably simple visual/textual concept. To make the poster I decided to simulate techniques of stamping and that was good because it made the work feel more authentic as a piece of protest which is easily reproduced. This was the most satisfying aspect of my poster in my opinion. However, due to the fact that I didn't expect the outlines of the chains I used as modules for my typography to be so thick, the letters weren't as clear as I wanted them to be. Changing the colours seems like a sensible way to fix this issue.
One thing I might also do differently later is try to synthesize as soon as I start coming up with overwhelming amount of ideas. I also should use more durable materials to make the stamps because the cardboard I used quickly deteriorated and I had to spend a significant amount of time making more stamps.

First setting values important to me, then choosing which were more important and finally developing concepts and issues regarding those values until I came up with an idea for my protest. The day was mostly reflective, therefore there was no product for my work, though it was very interesting to discuss issues and more personal aspects of my classmate's convictions and beliefs. I was also introduced to a variety of interesting and exciting artists by my teachers, artists which I'm very excited to look into.
I learned that:
- Mindmaps and categorization are useful tools to come up with ideas or develop them further.
- My classmates can offer great help with the development of ideas and concepts, and I can help them as well! Discussion regarding our works are always helpful and usually benefit all of those participating.

Since I knew I wouldn't be able to stay in class during the afternoon I made sure to go extra early to prepare everything and talk to my tutors to make sure I didn't miss anything important from yesterday.
Thankfully I prepared in advance and had almost everything ready to present, and since my protest was made through flyers there was no need for me to constantly perform or march.
I didn't have any big issues today. I prepared everything in advance and made sure to predict any issues I might have had and set up ways to work around them, but things went very smoothly.
The only thing that bothered me a little was the fact that I couldn't present my work to my colleagues and get their opinions during the afternoon, but missing this was unavoidable. It was best to not attend to class if I was feeling so unwell.
Important:
- Arriving early on presentation day seems like a good thing to start doing regularly. The extra time and space is very helpful.
- Having as much stuff on hand during presentation day is good because you can select things on the spot and won't risk regretting not bringing some of your works.

26/03/2018
Today I presented my 60 Images to my classmates, learned about Cezar's work and began my studies on filters.
When presenting my images I had a good opportunity to learn about the solutions my classmates found to certain topics I had difficulties with. This helped me understand how I could have expanded on my interpretations of the picture subjects. One thing that I noticed is that pictures taken on public spaces and other environments which couldn't be controlled tended to catch more eyes and get more praise.
One of my classmates told me that my images lacked a common language, which was extremely constructive criticism. I reevaluated my pictures afterwards and selected my favorites, hopefully I'm able to identify trends in them or similarities which I may start honing to perhaps transform into a more uniform visual language.
Cezar's lecture was interesting even though I had already been introduced to his work during the pre-foundation course. This is because this time he spoke of the connections between concepts of unrelated subjects within his work. The fact that most of his works are autobiographic also interested me because it made me wonder how I could express more of my personality through my works. I thought of opinions, experiences and feelings and how I could express them through art, which was very exciting.
When we were introduced to the filters activity I had the urge to grab my sketchbook and start developing my ideas through it, which was a good sign, since I was worried about not getting accustomed to using it.
What was good about the activity, also, was that I managed to try out multiple different filters and experimented with them without fear of them yielding extremely poor results. Because of this I managed to find out some very interesting ways to manipulate my pictures, which I am excited to expand on tomorrow.

27/03/2018
Today I built my camera filters. When I came into class I had a very clear plan of what I was going to do, but that quickly started getting in my way because I began to encounter issues with my projects. Learning from my mistakes during the protest project, I decided to scrap my original ideas and adapt to the resources I had at hand.
That meant that I had to give up on making a polished product and focus on functionality. After I did so things started moving at a satisfactory pace. I had to scrap some ideas and some objects which I had already built but it was worth it. Turns out the rugged look of my filters was quite appealing in a strange way. Not only that, but the fact that they had certain flaws resulted in pictures which weren't exactly perfect, though appealing due to their flaws, for example, the yellow tint in the hole filter's pictures. The second filter I developed was even more interesting due to the fact that I had many different ideas of how I could possibly do it, which meant that I evaluated each possibility, selected the best one, built it, adjusted it, tested it, readjusted it, tested it again and did final adjustments before I was satisfied with it. All of this within the time limit! I believe that this worked because I didn't linger on my failures and scrapped bad ideas. Indecision slows you down and I couldn't afford the time to insist on a failed concept. Managing this is something that I've gotten pretty good at throughout the course.
The two filters which I developed were very satisfactory. Even though I originally wanted the two of them to be used in tandem, their nature worked destructively, not constructively within the picture, therefore I separated them without a second thought.
This was good because both results are plenty interesting by themselves and both can be used with great ease even without the other. Because of this happy accident I now have two completely different filters which means that I have plenty of possible pictures I may take.
I only wish I had found a better way to affix the second filter (double exposure). I tried an elastic band, rubber bands and string. When I get home I'll try using a belt, hopefully it works better

28/03/2018
Today I had two main activities, one being the found photograph manipulation assignment and the other being the workshops for my research and reflection padlets.
From the workshop for the research padlet I learned plenty of useful things. Firstly I learned that I have to better express my reflections on the works I analyze by carefully detailing aspects of them which catch my eye or which served as inspiration for me. This leads to the second aspect which I need to work on, which is writing about the inspirations and ideas that I had from observing such works, describing my thought process through them.
Afterwards I went back to class and worked on the photograph manipulation task. I was behind the class due to the workshop so I had to come up with a fast solution for the first exercise, which was addition. I decided to pick a picture of a young girl with a large dress and purse which I had because it was a simple subject/background picture with plenty of space to work with. I then decided that I wanted to simulate something that the girl herself would do to the picture and I also wanted to try out sewing since I hadn't done it before, so I decided that I wanted to decorate the picture with a sewn pattern and an ornament, which I decided it would be a lace. Since I had never sewn before I very quickly looked online for examples of sewing patterns and decided on the one which seemed the easiest, yet still interesting to look at.
The results were good, though I had limited time, therefore I couldn't finish the decorations in time. I decided I would finish my work during lunchtime since I was excited to finish the piece.
Afterwards I worked on the subtraction exercise and for it I selected a picture from which I could build a narrative. I settled on a picture which depicted a happy couple and a man which seemed to look solemnly at one of the lovers. I decided that I would illustrate a narrative of jealousy and for that I decided to scrape off the face of the person who the sad man would supposedly be jealous of. I used the back of my razor to do it since it is an easy to control, hard, flat surface. I expected the picture to get scratched but it ended up being scraped off. This wasn't my intention but it still yielded a result similar to the one I desired and it looked more aggressive than I expected, so I was satisfied with it.
After lunch I first worked on the sewing/knotting assignment. Since I had already sewn earlier during class I wanted to try something more elaborate. I decided I wanted to make knots, but during my experiments I learned that knotting wouldn't be feasible in the way I wanted to do it, so while I was unwinding the half done knots I had the idea to weave two pictures together. I then picked two pictures which had similar sizes, a single subject and these subjects had to be in different positions. I then ended up with two pictures which I then taped facing opposite sides, and cut in diagonals. I then arranged them in a weaving pattern and stapled the sides for stability. Afterwards I sewed the sides and cut off the borders with the staples. The result was very impressive, but it took too long to achieve and wasn't viable for the fast-paced class.
For the next exercise, holes, I decided to do something faster. While looking through the pictures I had I selected a picture of a soccer team, so I decided to make a hole in it in a characteristic manner by kicking it in. I stapled the picture to a wooden box and made a pilot hole for my foot to ensure that the picture would be perforated instead of getting ripped at the points in which it was stapled.
This worked very well, but afterwards, after feeling it was lacking something I decided to tape a picture to fill the hole formed by my foot. I picked a very cheeky picture of a man showing his tongue since I felt like it would be appropriate considering the method used for creating such hole.
After this was the reflective journal workshop and from it one piece of advice stood out, which was that I should try to write only essential learning experiences from my days, yet as many as I can.
There were many important things that I learned today, therefore this reflection is very large, however I will try to keep my reflections more descriptive but also smaller and with less useless info.
Lastly, after class, I worked on the any method exercise. I first decided I would damage a picture by soaking it. This wasn't very successful since photographic paper is very resistant to water. I then decided to sand off the back of pictures with sky in them to make it more translucent, giving the inmpression that the sky was shining. The effect did work, but wasn't as interesting as I believed it would be and also pictures would get ripped eventually after some sanding. I then decided I would crumple up pictures, but since I felt like that wouldn't be a unique intervention of artistic nature, especially since some pictures were already crumpled and creased, I decided to use paint to alter the pictures. I got this idea from a friend who put paint liberally on their picture, which achieved a very satisfying result. I decided to soak the crumpled papers on a mixture of red acrylic paint mixed with india ink. I selected this mixture because red fits very well with black and white pictures and because the variations in tone caused by the mixture created a dried blood-like aspect, which seemed very dramatic and could open up much room for interpretation of the intervention.
I was happy with the results, though since the pictures were soaked I had to wait quite a bit for them to dry. I left some in the studio to finish drying. I hope they do until tomorrow. If not, I'll have to remove some of the excess paint, which wouldn't be ideal since clumps of paint would introduce a new dimension to my work.

29/03/2018
Today I worked on the development of a 3d display method for photography and then afterwards presented my works developed throughout the week.
In the development of the 3d display I had the idea to make a sphere out of a picture. I decided to do so because the methods presented as examples by my tutors had too many straight angles and I wanted to do a more organic shape. Since I had brought in pictures of buildings I also thought that a more organic shape would result in an interesting outcome. I studied the way through which globes are made and then replicated the method on one of my photographs. My intention was to make three objects, one for each photo. However, to assemble the pieces in the correct order a significant amount of time was required, therefore I built a single globe. The image I selected, however, didn't have a clear subject in it, and since the details were around the borders of it, the object was mostly cut out. As an object, it turned out good, though maybe I should use a picture with more details next time. While I was building the globe, however, I realized that the pieces I used, when arranged in certain ways, resembled leaves. After I was finished with the globe I decided to spend my lunch developing this concept with the leftover cutouts which I wasn't able to assemble from the other two pictures. This solution dialogues very well with the pictures of buildings, since the patterns of windows and balconies became the veins of leaves or the roughness of a trunk, creating an interesting relationship between artificial and natural structures. I ended up with a small vase-like structure which had small plants made out of paper in it. Such paper had photographs of buildings and the plants rested upon a bed of cement shavings.
After lunchtime I had to display my works. To me I saw the shelves in the classroom as a great way to present my works, since I could separate each assignment on each shelf and display my 60 images simultaneously without occupying a whole table, yet making the whole collection visible. I thought it was strange that most of the classroom didn't use a different method other than displaying their works on a table. I had permission to use the shelves, though next time I should probably ask before starting to display my works wether or not I am able to display them where I want to display them.

This issue is probably caused by the fact that I still don't have the custom of registering every bit of information I research. I only register things that I find very useful. There was, however, one which I saw and felt as though I wanted my drawing diary to look more like it.
Until now I had been making mostly sketches, sometimes not even finishing drawings on certain pages. I felt as though that was fine because to me the drawing diary existed mostly for the purpose of keeping the student working and developing concepts and visual languages through drawing, therefore allowing for less refined work.
I decided, however, that I want to spend more time on my daily drawings, because even if I try to work with techniques and methods which I'm not used to or good at every day, not making something with the smallest bit of refinement won't help me learn or develop as much as I have the potential to.
Not only that, but looking through my older drawings I felt that they seemed very carelessly made and didn't look very good. I don't want to give someone who looks at my diary that impression. I have to spend more time on my drawings.

This motivated me to look further into cinematography, which is a medium similar in some aspects to video game design, my intended BA.
Some of the most successful games out there have extremely well produced cinematic teasers (Witcher 2, World of Warcraft, Overwatch) and classic story-driven games have memorable cutscenes which are also impressively arranged (Metal Gear series, Final Fantasy games), sometimes being comprised mostly of arranged cinematics (Heavy Rain, Telltale games). The skills required to make a good shot and to create a good cutscene are very similar.
I feel, however, relatively confused as to where to start my research, though I will try looking at websites and social media accounts to perhaps find references to books I may read.

Leaving them under my bed is not viable. Perhaps I could find a way to store them in a wardrobe. Leaving them in my folder is not viable since it will get too heavy fast.
I also need to better arrange the computer files for my photographs of projects. All of the presentations have been registered, though I haven't yet properly organized the files in my computer, so it was a mess to try to find the pictures I was looking for.
As for the drawing, I decided that I will start doing anatomy-based sketches for my diary. I had been focusing too much on faces so I need to give the human body more attention. Other things I want to try are the development of unnatural anatomies, creating creatures such as mermaids and centaurs in my drawings while giving thought to their supposed anatomy, and also I want to draw more landscapes or buildings.

09/04/2018
Today I watched multiple lectures regarding various topics.
Firstly I attended a presentation regarding the Dado project. My reflections regarding the things I learned from this experiences are mostly recorded within my research file, though there are some reflections I believe to be relevant to this register.
Firstly, regarding my notes, as the presentations went by I decided that I would take more notes than I usually do and also try to register every idea that popped up in my head while I listened. This decision made it extremely easy to write on my research file but, most importantly, I had some interesting thoughts and ideas which I probably would have forgotten were it not for the fact that I had registered them.
Another thing which I noticed was that it would have benefited me if I had known what the presentation was about a little earlier, because it would have given me time to research and prepare accordingly. This wasn't a very big problem this time though I do see how it may be problematic for me to go into lectures not knowing very well what they are about. Knowing in advance can help you identify questions you may want to ask and also allows you to have a better insight on the lecturers and their practice.
Lastly, a problem which I identified was that one of my classmates, who was sitting on the front row, fell asleep during the lecture, and afterwards even spoke disrespectfully towards one of the lecturers. I hadn't considered this yet, though the image that we have represents EBAC as an institution. If my classmates behave so poorly during important events which present great opportunities for the institution, such as Dado, the whole institution suffers from it. Perhaps I should bring up this concern with my class representative, however uncomfortable it may be to do so.
Now, regarding the lectures on EBAC during the afternoon, I didn't make nearly as many notes, mostly because their subjects weren't as alien and new to me. Even still, it would have benefited me to make more notes when it came down to writing on my research file. Still, I managed to learn some interesting things but I mainly learned of a few subjects which I have to research, such as the legal aspects of relevant artistic processes in my country and the way in which the Brazilian government distributes grants for media professionals.

10/04/2018
Today I developed ideas for my publication and listened to lectures during the afternoon.
Regarding the development of ideas for my publication, I had issues picking what I would make. I am afraid to begin working on a subject and become stuck due to inexperience with the medium I'm using, or regret choosing a certain subject.
I believe that this is mostly a matter of me being more confident on my work and assessing what I am able to do within the timeframe provided. I do have two weeks for this project, so there is plenty of time to work on a project. Only something extremely elaborate or based off of methods which I am not familiar with would be impossible to make due to time constraints.
I do have ideas, but I want my work to truly shine. I am going to look at the recommended references from the brief to set limits to my work regarding theme and quality. I want to make something elaborate, but I can't afford to spend extreme amounts of time working on my project.
Regarding the lectures I watched, the first one, which was about the other pathway option for the foundation students, was not as interesting to me as yesterday's. This is because I am quite sure that I want to go to the moving image pathway, though there were some interesting points raised by the lecturer. Firstly regarding effort it was said that success is directly related to investment and immersion of oneself to their work. I agree with this and I want to be able to this perhaps even with the project I am currently working on. Sometimes I don't feel very immersed in my projects and those are always the poorest.
Secondly, it was said that students will have chances to work with people from courses other than the ones they are in. This is big news, especially for someone like me, who is interested in designing games. This means I might have the chance to work alongside animators or illustrators and that provides me a chance to have experiences very similar to the professional practice of videogame design.

11/04/2018
Today I further developed my initial ideas and attended a Photoshop workshop.
Regarding the idea development, I did well to quickly eliminate ideas. If something was unfeasible or not interesting, I would eliminate it without remorse. Holding on to bad ideas or mixing ideas too much yields terrible results and is a bad practice. At the end of the day I had one idea for a digital outcome and one idea for a physical outcome.
I had both because I liked my idea for a physical outcome though I thought that working on a video would be ideal for someone who intends to go to the moving image pathway. My idea for the video, however, wasn't very interesting, so throughout my whole day I kept trying to come up with other solutions. This was good because eventually I had a very good idea, which I think will be the one I use for the project. To immerse yourself in the project and to constantly think about your work seems to be an extremely effective way to generate good ideas.
During the afternoon, the Photoshop workshop was useful to me in the sente that I learned simpler ways to do things I already did in the software. I also was able to truly understand how useful a raw image file can be. I will work on some of my 60 images from the past assignment as practice and to improve them in general.

12/04/2018
Today I had a critique of my initial ideas, then went to a screenprint workshop.
During the critique, listening to my classmate's ideas gave me an idea of what they were developing. It was good to hear this because it helped me evaluate my own ideas. I also had an opportunity to share knowledge with tutors and classmates which was very constructive and helped me find solutions to issues I had identified in my project.
At the end of the critique I was able to finally decide on what I am going to do for my project. This is good because now I can dive into production without constantly changing my mind on what I am doing. Having decided on a relatively simple project was good because it allows me to spend extra time developing it conceptually. I decided that I also want to develop a poster to my video using screenprint.
I decided to use this method because during the screenprint workshop I noticed that such technique would be very effective for the visual language I want to convey. I have to buy materials and consider getting my own screen. It would be very useful to have one since screenprint is an easy and cheap method to create flyers, posters and to stylize clothes. There are many possibilities which I will very likely explore. Not only that, having my own screen gives me some freedom regarding the methods I use to create the printing surfaces. During the workshop the tutor and some students discussed alternative methods to create the screens and some of the methods might be worth trying in the future.

13/04/2018
Today I attended a hand-printing workshop and had time to work on my project.
Regarding my project, I was able to manage doing what I had planned to do for the day, which was to develop my idea for the video and create a storyboard to guide me through the recording process. Making the storyboard wasn't as difficult as I expected, though I did make a very simple one. I did so because I wanted to leave some space for me to adapt and maybe add a thing or two since my video probably won't exceed the time limit if I do it as I've planned.
Regarding the workshop, it was an interesting experience, though very unrelated to my project, but for it I had the idea of developing a poster for my video, one which could lead people to the digital platform where the video is. The woodcut technique demonstrated had a style which seemed coherent with the atmosphere I want to surround my project in, therefore, if I follow my schedule correctly, I should have enough time to develop this poster. It would also be a good way to monetize my work and also promote it.

For it I want to apply datamoshing techniques, though I didn't expect the method to me as complex as it is, so I couldn't do the proper research within the time frame I had planned. I will have to hold off on the recording the next day because I want to be sure to get the technique right. It is the most important aspect of my video, so if I have to simplify some of my ideas for the recording I won't care as long as I am able to bedatamoshing my video as I want.

15/04/2018
The datamoshing technique is much more difficult to work with than I expected. To create the effects I need to use outdated and destructive programs and processes which at every step risk corrupting your files or crashing. For practice, I decided to experiment on many different small videos and this was a good decision because it allowed me to better understand the effects I can create and how long it would take to edit and mosh a video of the length I intend to make my publication (one and a half minute should be fine).
Because I now have a good idea of how datamoshing works and how much I can do with it, I decided to make some changes to my script. I will reduce the amount of acting in it because I am not good at it and wouldn't be able to move in a natural way, which is essential for crating a good P-frame duplication bloom.
Another thing that I will change will be the sequence of the video. Now I will juxtapose images in a fast sequence, emphasizing movement and similarity, and insert narrative building scenes of my eye. I intend to progressively increase the amount of datamoshing in the clips of my eye to enforce the message of influence and active viewing.

16/04/2018
Today I recorded my base video samples and wrote the new script down to help with time management. Regarding the recordings, having been immersed in my project and constantly thinking about both narrative and method, I was able to easily identify good samples for my video. Sudden movement, easily identifiable imagery, bold colors and sometimes plain backgrounds were elements which I was looking for my video's samples.
To record the samples I decided to capture a screen with my camera. I did so because this method allowed me to record in high quality with great ease and speed, while also producing visual effects which were desirable for me, such as flickers and waves in the images, as well as the sway of my hands holding the camera. These small, but effective differences will allow me to reproduce effects which otherwise would require significant use of artificial tampering, which would go against the project's proposal.
One issue I had was that I constantly felt as if I wasn't being productive enough in the studio, and that's because the conditions in which I had to work weren't very good. Since I had to stay in a place with no light sources which could cause reflections on the screen, I ended up having to sit on the ground and leave my laptop on it as well. Because of this I had to constantly stand up and stretch because of my back and I also had to keep crawling on the floor and readjusting my camera's focus every time I sat back down.
If I ever have to do work like this again I will have to consider preparing in advance to record as much at home as possible to avoid the issues mentioned.

17/04/2018
Today I recorded the clips for my video and began cutting and selecting the footage I recorded.
Since I had this very predetermined vision for a scene, I had to wait until I got home to record it. I wanted to record it at a specific spot and with the specific visual elements I envisioned, therefore I had to do something while I was at the studio.
What I decided to do was to start selecting and cutting the samples for my video to facilitate the editing process later. I also wrote on my Research File and updated it. I researched expressionist artists for reference and was inspired to use a similar style in my work. The description of my thoughts is in the Research File.
Regarding the recordings I did at home, at first I was very confident about the framing, positioning and lighting of the shots I would take, but quickly realized that there were better options for my video. Though it was hard to let go of the idea I had so clearly developed in my head and which would please me greatly, I went for a simpler and more coherent solution. Because of this decision, narrative and continuity were suddenly made much easier to reproduce in my video since the imagery recorded is extremely similar and identifiable.

18/04/2018
Today I finished editing and moshed my video. It was very hard and stressful work, especially the Datamoshing portion of it. That is because the process itself requires much trial and error, which is why it is mostly used for smaller clips with only a few seconds of length.
Dealing with the software required for the process was also inevitably a bad experience because it is inherently prone to crashing and not very easy to use, requiring very meticulous tampering and specific conversions of the video for it to function appropriately.
Besides that, I didn't have other big issues on this stage because I had already storyboarded my video and cut the video samples. This meant that assembling the video was just a process of combining the pieces I had prepared in advance. Needless to say this was good because it saved time, allowing me to dedicate more time to datamoshing.
The datamoshing portion was only feasible within the day because I had already practiced much of the technique and already knew the effects I could and would generate, though, no matter how much planning or practice I may have done in preparation, nothing could have prevented the issues that I had, which were listed before. Tomorrow I will have much of the day free, which means that I might have enough time to develop a poster, which I thought to be impossible to do within the time limit.

19/04/2018
Today I developed my poster, organized my works for the assessment, prepared my video for the show reel and published my it online.
Regarding the development of the poster, it was good to wait until my work was done to develop the artwork to illustrate it. That is because I was able to have a better idea of what my video looks like, therefore being able to create something more coherent with it. My first ideas for the poster were completely different than the one that I went with, though thematically they are very similar. The earlier ideas I had involved woodcut techniques and illustrations, very manual processes, while the version of the poster I went with is a screencap of my video, featuring a heavily distorted eye, which I photoshopped and included the work's nickname and a QR code directing to the Vimeo upload I did. This way, people who have the poster can easily access the video I made.
I decided to direct the QR code to the Vimeo link because vimeo has a better compression algorithm than YouTube, making the video seem more fluid. I did, however, also create a YouTube video of my work for exposure. Uploading on both platform does me no harm, it only benefits me in the aspect that the video becomes more accessible.
Regarding the assembly of my works for the assessment, it was good that I had kept almost everything up to date until now. This meant that preparing the files and collecting physical pieces was very easy, especially now that I have tidied my files in my computer and carefully labeled them appropriately. I only have yet to print some things in the following day. Unfortunately I had absolutely no free time to do this earlier so, though not ideal, I will have to be prepared for any issues I may face when printing. I have already looked at all the places which offer printing services near EBAC and made sure to record this information to be absolutely sure that I am able to print what I have to print before my classes.

20/04/2018
Publish crit feedback notes:
Today I had one of colleagues, Bruna, criticise my Self-Publish assignment's outcomes. She commented on my editing techniques, my use of colour, the manner in which meaning is conveyed and my poster production.
Regarding the editing techniques, she said that the technique I used was very good because it enriched the meaning and built narrative, which was my intention. She also said that, though strange, it yielded some interesting and sometimes beautiful imagery. This was unexpected, though welcomed, because I didn't expect a viewer to experience beauty from my work. This, however isn't a negative thing, since she said that my choice of colour in the development of the poster was very well made. To develop the poster I experimented with many different hues and intensities of the colours, so it was good to see that the experimentation paid off.
One thing that she mentioned which I agree with was that, even though not obvious, the narrative can be perceived, which is good, though she suggested that I mad at least a small synthesis of my ideas in the Vimeo and youtube video descriptions.
Lastly she said that perhaps working on more poster designs would have been a good idea, and I agreed with her, however, given the amount of time I had available, it wouldn't be feasible for me to develop more pieces. Maybe if I organise my time better in the future I'll be able to do something of the sort.
Overall the criticism I received gave me good ideas and helped me feel more confident and confirm that some of my intentions were being exacted. I believe that the best example of this was the fact that she was able to tell what my video was about though didn't feel as though the theme was too obvious. This means that I was able to achieve my main objective with this piece, and I am pleased with this result.
