The electron carriers alternate between reduced and oxidized states.

When the electron passes from the “uphill” neighbor the component becomes reduced as it accepts electron, 

 The same component turns to oxidized form when it passes the electron to it’s “downhill” neighbor. 

Although NADH AND FADH2 each donate the same number of electrons for oxygen reduction,FADH2 provides one third less energy for ATP  rather than NADH
