Understanding: To me, Atticus is a very interesting and admirable character, and his rule of putting yourself in another’s shoes really resonated with me. Atticus is able to take the time to look beyond the surface and understand people. It makes him a more tolerant person, and allows him to be content with the fact that both good and evil can coexist in a person, because sometimes it’s just human nature. I think this is an important lesson for everyone to learn.
Frustration: While researching the effects of To 🤬 a Mockingbird in 1960 when it was written, I was frustrated that there was not more information on the subject. Because of the time period, there were not many primary sources available online, and many reports did not provide the detail that I was hoping for. Also, the databases I used did not have extensive information, so I had to use online websites.
Celebration: One success that I experienced was being able to internally source my information. I knew how to cite quotes from a book and make a bibliography, but I was stumped by internally sourcing information. I used the resource from the hyperdoc, and I was able to internally source everything from a website to an article to a video. I was proud of myself for solving that problem on my own.

Understanding:

From my research I learned about the determinism philosophy and the how people’s individual life experiences lead them to different beliefs about fate and free will. Their belief is determined by their choice to view the universe a certain way. One event may seem like evidence of fate for one person while another will say it was caused by the choices made up to that point, so in the end it doesn’t matter because life turns out the same way for people whether it was free will or fate that existed the whole time.

Frustration:

A frustration was finding sources on determinism philosophy and different websites had different meanings for phrases used when describing determinism.

Celebration:

A celebration was finally finding a good source on determinism that was very detailed and gave me more ideas about what Vonnegut may have been trying to convey in certain parts of the novel that I hadn’t considered before.

One new understanding I learned was the formula for how successful companies are able to become successful. Because ask the question "why am I doing this" they have significant advantage over other companies that are only in it for the monetary profit. By asking the question and answering it, their purpose in what they do becomes why people would buy their product because according to Simon Sinek, people by why you do something than what you do.
One frustrating process was trying to create a thesis for the essay. Using the literary elements was easy to do; however connecting the novel to outside sources was more difficult.
One success that I experienced was being able to format my essay in a cohesive order that made sense with what I wanted to convey.

Understanding:
From my research I was able to learn about dehuminization and the psychology behind it. When we dehuminize others, the part in out brain assiociated with disgust turn on and the part of your brai associated with empathy turns off. People are able to see other as lesser tha them and not feel bad for it. While I have seen this in the world i am now able to have a definition and word for it.
Frustration:
I think the most frustating part was finding outside resouces for my topic. While I already knew about the Holocaust, there was so much more to it that I did not know. Also I has to use a thesaurus a lot because i kept using the same words to descibe.
Celebration:
Being able to say my essay was done and being comfortable with what I wrote is a big success for me. It is hard for me to write essays and format them so they are in a good flowiung order.

Understanding:
I learned that there was a gender divide within racial conflict among African American and Caucasian women during the Civil Rights Movement. When we think about the CRM, we assume that the hardships of being African American in America were resolved. Although it has significantly improved, the negative treatment of African Americans continues as they face discrimination and prejudice today within our justice system. In addition, Caucasian women were also stereotyped as rude, wealthy women with families during the CRM.

Frustration:
I found it frustrating that the treatment of African Americans within the novel is still prominent in our society and finding sources that supported my thesis. Just like my thesis states, because of the generalizations about the racial divide, many people assume that women face the same adversities as men which is not true. It was difficult trying to find sources that supported my claim. However, I was able to think outside the box in order to make myself credible.continues today

Celebration:
A success that I experienced was having a personal connection to my essay. While doing research, I felt a connection with the articles and characters of the novel. As I get older, I grow a better understanding of my race and role in society.

Understanding:
After thoroughly reading my novel, I was really able to get a clear understanding of its society and its social values but from a different perspective. The American dream is the idea that freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and success. I learned that this society is corrupt in so many ways because people are so controlled by money and wealth and believe it is the only way to succeed. Those who were born into wealth were automatically assumed to be the only individuals that could possible achieve anything in life, and everyone else unfortunately would not turn out to be successful.
Frustration:
A frustration I experienced was trying to look for sources that contained the most accurately correct information from my novel. I also struggled at first to compose my thoughts and figure out exactly which topic I wanted to cover
Success:
Something I was successful with and achieved was staying on top of my paper and not falling behind, as well as really taking every route I could to support and answer my essential topic.

I have never heard of a slave ship called the Zong so to find how the death of slaves meant nothing and that the owners wanted to sue the insurance because there cargo(property) was ruined just blew my mind.
Frustration:
The part I had struggle with was managing my time. Many novels and works of art from the time period portray the opposite and attempt to show that soldiers were against the war and supported the protests that were happening on American college campuses.
Frustration:
The research portion of the project was challenging for me because it was hard to find good, reliable sources that said what I wanted them to say. Some of the sources I found were very biased, and others had little information that would support my claims.
Celebration:
One success I had was having a deeper understanding of the Vietnam war and the way it affected United States culture and the people that did not go to the war.

Understanding: I never realized how accurate some novels are in portraying and predicting the future. My novel, Brave New World, is eerily accurate in its predictions about life in the future even though it was written in 1932. Its quite astonishing how authors such as Huxley and Orwell were able to create a close interpretation of the future so long ago.
Frustration: It was somewhat difficult to relate the novels main themes to the time period in which it was written, as the novel was set so far in the future and made many drastic and bold predictions about the future.
Celebration:I feel that I am now more educated and have a broader understanding on theories of society.

Understanding: I learned more about the underlying principles behind feudal society, as well as the importance a family truly holds in such a place to influence the progress of that society. At its core, a family is often taken for granted, and this can be attributed to the frequency one interacts with them among other reasons. Yet, a family's values and teachings can reach far beyond that of the household and can be traced into and effect the outcome of such broad things as war, petty disputes, and trade agreements.

Frustration: In part by the fact that the novel takes place in a fictional society with elements of fantasy and science-fiction, it was difficult finding sources that would properly relate and prove beneficial for an analysis.

Celebration: I enjoyed being able to analyze my favorite character in the novel and track his progress and development as he rises to power.

A book can be a starting point of an entire generation of other books, films, and even games. This shows that while many people no longer read books, they still have a large influence on our lives.

Frustration: It was difficult to find research and articles that directly talk about the influences of a book, mostly because the authors probably do not want to be put under the risk of being sent to court for plagiarism . That, and little details may not be from influences, and are instead simply tropes (Dumbledore for example).

Celebration: Finding that many of the things that you love all come from one book is fascinating. Many of the books that I have read and the games that I play or have played are somehow connected to this one book that is not even that popular among society today. This fact makes me respect and love this book even more.

Though it is still not hidden very well.

Frustration:
Sometimes I had difficulty finding the right quotes from the book and articles to incorporate into my essay. I wanted to use examples that helped to accurately show my ideas but I wasn’t sure what would be right.

Celebration:
I think a big celebration was the difference between my final draft and rough draft. I was having a really tough time writing my rough draft but as I wrote my final draft all my ideas really came together.

There was less of a debate on the issue than I thought so there was little information.

Celebration: When I was having issues with my rough draft I ended up switching some of my focus of the theme I was writing about in the book while revising it for the final so there was a big difference between the different copies of the paper.

Understanding: I learned about the topic I chose to focus on in my book, masculinity. I learned about how too much of it can be a bad thing.

Frustration: There were times where I couldn't find any sources and it was pretty annoying. A lot of sources were also pretty unreliable. When I had to quote the book, I had a hard time finding it in the book because I couldn't remember where the quote was in the book but I knew it'd be perfect for the paper.

Celebration: When I finally finished my paper at 5 minutes to midnight. I had this really good feeling and I was proud of my work and felt I would get a good grade on it.

Understanding:
I now understand how much stronger writing in active voice makes a paper or a piece of writing. I believe we mentioned active voice in class and it stuck with me. I think my paper is better because of it

Frustration:
I was frustrated at the struggle of time management. My book was so big and my topic was so broad that I found the process a little overwhelming. I felt like there was so much more for me to do after I completed each step.

Celebration:
Finally figuring out how easy it could be to cite web pages. Once I figured out the "formula," I stopped needing to use NoodleTools. I feel a lot less intimidated by mla bibliographies now.
