I traveled to go Aurora Chasing. Had a great time with friends from Discovery (David, Amy, Kim and her boyfriend John) and a local couple (Martin and Pat) who befriended my friend, Kim. Kim has been working in Yellowknife for the past few years with her Google job. Being that Kim, Martin, and David are professional photographers we have fabulous aurora pictures. They took all of them. John is a musician and makes a living at it with his band Cowboy Mouth and also single albums. He gave me one of his CD's and serenaded us at the condo.

A specific light in a fake lighthouse in old town Yellowknife indicates if Aurora is out. Green is aurora, yellow is possible. Red is so sad too bad.
Some Asian cultures (who half filled the plane from Edmonton to Yellowknife believe that Aurora sightings are good luck and aid fertility.

There is 1 road at the end of Rt 4 (Ingalls Trail) that the diamond mines (hundreds of miles down the road) create to truck in supplies over a 3 month period. It is a HUGE operation. It has 3 ice slides, a bar, boutique, bathrooms (4 outhouses built into the snow walls), ice stage with balcony seating and nightly entertainment, maze, ice xylophone, and more. Very cool. Sculptures too. At the end of this month worldwide ice sculptures will be there for a contest. Wish I could have seen those.

The aurora is a she. Sometimes she morphs as slow as a green sloth. Green is too strong a term. To the naked eye, aurora is mostly greenish. It is a dull light or even bright gray. The colors indicate a combination of altitude and chemistry. Lower altitude has more oxygen and burns green. Higher up has more nitrogen and red/pink colors show off. Aurora dancing is my favorite display, especially with changing colors of red, pink, and more rarely blue and purple. At times dancing is like slow, soundless fireworks or the playing of piano keys.Out alone on an ice road, desolate and quiet, the sky puts on her marvelous show. We were out 5 nights in a row and enjoyed aurora every night. We saw falling stars every night too. After hours of viewing I began getting spoiled, of course, and wanted more of the spectacular displays of dancing.Temperatures at night were cold. We had to continually figure the Celcius to Fahrenheit. -10C was common. When there was wind , we felt it. But if we put on the gear from Martin, the temps didn't affect us much. You felt like the Michilan man, though. Our coldest night was ****.Daytime with the sun out didn't require my heavy jacket, although Amy, John and Kim still wore them. Most days were between 20 and 32F. The sun was strong. At the Ice Castle, the Snowking (the man who builds it every year for 23 years) told us he'd like 10 degrees colder when it was in the low 20s F. Saw the Aurora Borealis every night for 5 nights with falling stars every night too. It is fantastic. Most of the time you watch these whitish with a hint of green clouds moving slow as a sloth. The usual aurora that shows green in the photos is mostly white to the naked eye. But in the photos they leave the lens open between 6-12 seconds, which lets the green in. Sometimes they light up and the light dances up and down the clouds. The Best are the explosions that are soundless fireworks and a little quicker. These are red, pink and sometimes blue even to the naked eye. Fabulous! Specifically the Ingalls Road is northeast of Yellowknife and maintained by the Northwest Territories and Canada. It begins paved, then becomes gravel and then a series of hundreds of miles of ice and traveled portages. These are maintained by the handful of diamond mines at the end. The ice road is the original ice road for the TV series. Only open for 3 months, trucks move an immense amount of materials to support the diamond camps. The road is a lifeline for the year. Most of the year stuff is shipped by air. The road is very wide and even has Express Lanes! On the lakes there are signs for 1/2 km. Truckers know that they can't enter the lake until the truck in front of them reaches that .5 km sign. This precaution helps stop the water beneath the ice from creating disruptive waves.

Green is at lower altitudes and it is oxygen that is mostly burning the solar wind. Pink is higher altitudes and the burning of nitrogen.
