One technique the author uses to develop the character changes in order to develop the theme about power is dialogue. On page 76 and 79, the author writes ¨Jonas has been selected to be our next receiver of memory." and "For a moment he froze, consumed with despair. He didn't have it, the whatever-she-had-said. He didn't know what it was. Now was the moment when he would have to confess, to say, 'No I don't. I can't,"' In the story, Jonas had been eagerly waiting for his job and preparing for the moment that he knew he would get it. When he goes up to the podium to be assigned his job, however, he gets an assignment he's not expecting: the receiver of memory. He's shocked and can't believe his ears. This dialogue shows how much power the government has over the people, and how they're easily able to give someone a job they don't want, or don't expect. The author is trying to teach us that power can corrupt people, and that the government often has a lot of it. This theme is also shown again through dialogue on page 2, where the author writes "'Immediately,' the rasping voice through the speakers said. 'Leave your bicycles where they are.'" This quote follows the wake of an unknown plane flying over the town. The government feels threatened, so they immediately order their citizens to drop everything and run into their homes. The author is once again showing us the theme that the government has a lot of power, and that the citizens don't. As put wisely by the British historian Lord Acton: “All power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

On Page 240, the text states, "You mean we're going back to Germany!" The ship St. Luis is a symbol of the refugees hope for escape and freedom, they think everything will work out when they get to the United States but when they dock in Miami, they refused to let them in. This shows how much power and force the United States had in this situation, not letting any refugees through their country.

This is description because on page 141 it says "After a rapid flurry of punches, he grabbed Eric in a headlock and twisted, twisted, twisted until Eric was on his knees, fearing his neck would snap off." This is shown on page 63 when the author writes, "And by the time four years passed, he'd stopped dreaming of the sea." This clearly shows the struggle pong had to go through while he was running away and how he finally found peace and didn't need to run any more. The time Pong spent at Wat Singh made him realize he was safe because the power was balanced. This indicates the theme of (imbalance of power can lead to violence and inequality.)

In the book Refugee by Alan Gratz, the author uses character change to develop the theme of "Change does not come on its own, it comes to those who make sacrifices". When the book starts, we can see Josef's dad as a loving and caring parent. However, when his dad is sent to the Dachau concentration camp. While he is at the camp, he sees the Nazis kill many innocent people, and this makes him realize how horrible that the Nazis are. When his dad comes back, Josef is shocked to see that his dad is like a shell of who he was before he left, "All Josef could think about was what terrible things must've happened to his father to make him look so awful and act so scared" ~Page 38. This helps us understand his father's actions later in the book, as he wouldn't leave the cabin from fear, and was very open about his feelings towards the Nazis. This is a window because some people had to go through horrible circumstances that changed their lives forever. This shows us that the things that we do and those who we are around change who we are and how we act, so we should always be careful with who we surround ourselves with.

Eli and his family are trapped in a bunker because his dad believes there was a bomb that went off 7 years ago and there is still harmful radiation outside of the bunker. Eli knows more than his father though, he knows that there was never a bomb and so he confronts the dad, and ask his dad if they can leave the bunker. For example, on page 150 it says "Dad wouldn't let us out, were prisoners." This quote shows how the dad is keeping his family as prisoners even though he knows theirs not radiation outside because Eli had just told him.

A example of this is on pg 94 "Molly said, twisting her arms above her head and bending her body so it looked crooked. "Look at me! I'm a retard!" She laughed so hard. She snorted snot."

The Lois Lowery uses inner conflict in order to develop the theme that knowledge is power and that power creates separation. In the book once Jonas was introduced to the concept of war and the pain and suffering related to it, he began to see life and regular games in a different light then his peers. The author uses inner thinking and dialogue to develop the emotional conflict found in Jonas. For example, on page 168 the author wrote, "In his mind, Jonas saw again the face of the boy who has lain dying on a field and had begged him for water. He has a sudden choking feeling, as if it were difficult to breath." This helps to develop the theme by showing the negative aspect of the greatly honored and envied position of the giver. With his newfound knowledge, Jonas can not enjoy the innocent games of his friends without remembering the memory given by The Giver in his job training. The jobs are not choices, but mandatory assignments. This lets the government and the rules set by them control the feelings and emotions of the people. In Jonas's case this is a feeling of alienation as he can never become normal again.

But now, he feels safe and comfortable in an environment with balanced power.

In the book "Refugee" by Alan Gratz, the author used the technique of tone. Isabel's family is in the boat and they are facing challenges in their voyage. On page 101, the author writes, "'...We should have waited. Things change. They always change.' 'But do they ever get better?' Iván asked." This develops the element of character perspectives because it shows the side character's backstory. Lito has seen change come and go, from generation to generation, in Cuba. But none of it has made any difference, nothing has really changed. Not enough to improve the situation. They are stuck in a cycle because the power in being abused in Cuba, but everyone is too scared to do anything about it. This raises the stakes in the book because it shows that their only chance is to escape. They do not have any other option, meaning that they must take the opportunity they are giving. If they fail, they will never be able to leave the cycle. The author makes the reader unsympathetic to Lito, who is taking away the hope of everyone on board by saying that they should have stayed in Cuba. Not only that, but he is also hoping for something unreasonable by thinking that staying in Cuba under the abuse of power will lead to any real change. The author used this purposefully. He makes the reader unsympathetic to show how Lito's point of view, about staying put and things getting better, is wrong. This shows human nature is to be scared of taking steps away from what we are familiar to. We hope staying in the hands of corrupt power will somehow, magically, get better. This is utterly unrealistic. Change come by standing up for yourself. By rising up, even against those with power. Real change never came from doing nothing. This connects to the theme that one cannot expect change by staying in the same place. Change is acquired through hard work and sacrifice. That is the only way we can get power. This connect to the theme because it shows that we need to take risky decisions in order to improve ourselves. If we don't, we let those abusing their power win.

In the book, A Wish in the Dark, Christina Soontornvat uses a flashforward to help develop the conflict of Man vs. Society, Pong is a fugitive and is trying to avoid getting caught, to develop the theme, unbalanced power can lead to bias and unfairness. On page 63, it says, "And by the time four years had passsed, he'd stopped dreaming of the sea." This is a flashforward and it tells us that Pong has been worrying about being caught for the past four years of his life. But now, slowly he is starting to feel safe and comfortable in a place with balanced power. This clearly shows that since not one person who enforces their beliefs on all the monks, they treat Pong fairly and do not make discriminate him because of his past. Unlike the monks, the Governor enforces his beliefs so everyone thinks what he believes is right. So, in the book, A Wish in the Dark, Christina Soontornvat was using a flashforward to help develop the conflict of Man vs. Society, which leads to the theme, unbalanced power can lead to bias and unfairness.

The author uses multiple plot lines to develop the structure which further adds to our theme about how if you want to change the power balance you need to make sacrifices. Having the author contrast and compare Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud, helps the author show all of the different situations that happen when power is abused and people don't do enough about it. The outcome of these stories is all the same, its just different people, in different places, at different times. when the author provides similar descriptions in the different chapters it can help make this come through. First in Mahmoud's chapter "Mahmoud would never forget that feeling of paralyzing terror, of powerlessness" Then later in Isabel's "They were going back to Cuba, and there was nothing they could do about it," and Josef's "They were going back to Europe, and there was nothing he could do about it," this series of quotes helps us to understand how history can repeat itself when people continue to take advantage of power. It takes good people who sacrifice themselves in order to create this change that breaks the cycle of power being taken advantage of. When that doesn't happen, in the case of Isabel, Josef, and Mahmoud, people suffer until they decide to sacrifice themselves to work to wars a better future for their children and the next generation. once enough people do this, power can be overthrown and new better people can come to power and positively influence groups.

In the book it states "Ow, that hurts. What? are you talking to me? My arm... your hurting me... Eric did not move, did not raise a hand to help". This quote helps me realize that Eric's prospective was not taking into account others feelings and was extremely self centered since he did not want to put himself in a position where he could get bullied. Eric proceeds to believe that he should remain silent in situations where he is present and Griffin is bullying other students because he believes his own feeling are more valuable than others. Eric deep down is fully aware that he is not true friends with Griffin and he uses Griffin as a safety net from getting bullied. Later within the text Eric's prospective will change fro the better and he will begin to turn on Griffin after he realizes that certain things can greatly affect students fro a long period of time. When Eric's prospective shifts on Griffin, he begins to bully Eric by reporting a knife and getting into physical fights with him. For this reasoning I conclude that the author used dialog and description to capture the characters changing prospective.
