I am Harsh Kumar, I am from Punjab, India. I completed my senior secondary education at St. Soldier. Divine. Public school with a commerce stream. After that, I came to Canada with a student visa. I am currently a student in Business diploma at Fleming College Toronto. Currently, I am working as a cashier and stock checker at ARZ Store in Mississauga. I have one dream in my life, which is to become a Canadian police officer. After completing my business diploma, I will start my journey toward getting my dream job. Firstly, I must fulfill some requirements, such as permanent residency in Canada. To get PR, I am currently learning French from online classes with my studies to gain CLB 7 in the DELF Exam. After this, I have to pursue another course related to law enforcement and, last but not least, physical fitness. To achieve my goal, I am preparing for a physical fitness test and a written test that includes some general knowledge and situational judgment tests. Apart from that, I also attend some Carrier fairs and seminars that can provide me with valuable insight and more networking opportunities. In addition, I keep connecting myself with news and developments in law enforcement, which can help me understand current issues and trends that can help me pass the interviews for my dream job.

My strengths and weaknesses are the following:

Strengths:

Ability to solve the problem:

As my teachers and friends say in my class during school, I have the best IQ to solve issues with better ideas.

Communication skills:

I talk with everyone very politely and listen to everyone's views regarding the issue.

physical fitness:

I rise early in the morning to go to the park to exercise, make my body fit and healthy, and meet job requirements.

The quality of leadership:

The last but not the least is leadership quality. I have the qualities to lead and motivate others toward the job.

Weakness:

lack of patience:

I had a weakness: a lack of patience, which means I have issues with activities that take too much time to complete.

lack of experience:

The lack of experience is a significant issue because of any activity in past years that is related to law enforcement.

not control on anger:

I have a weakness of not controlling my anger. Some times take action with rage, which is wrong.

confused by being overburdened with work:

Sometimes, I need clarification with too many tasks. So that is another weakness.

Timeline:

I have a business diploma, so after completing this course in August, I will take my DELF exam and receive my PR ( which may be a process of 2 years ). After that, I will pursue a course in law and enforcement. This first includes pre-admission preparation, which will take up to 2 months, and then the diploma, which is about two years, and then police academy training, which is about 6 to 12 months. Finally, I will achieve my dream job.

Week 2: Communication Culture and Work

This week, I looked at how dynamics are impacted by communication culture at the workplace. I noticed how cultural variations negatively impact expectations and the methods of communication at work. This information is essential for developing productive collaboration and teamwork in various settings.

The best thing I learned is the importance of changing the communication facts in the cultural environment. For example, direct and explicit messages are very crucial in low-context societies. On the other hand, nonverbal and implicit messages are essential in high-context societies. Understanding these differences can reduce the chance of fights, conflicts, misunderstandings, or confusion. Also, in the eyes of the law, everyone will be equal, even if it's from the same culture or a different one.

This week, I discussed the importance of focused listening and proper writing in all professions, even the cashier and the police profession.

Proper and fully focused listening allows me to understand people's issues. Listening does not only mean hearing the words of others but also understanding their underlying message; moreover, it works as a tool for problem-solving by listening to feedback. Apart from that, proper listening can also reduce fights and misunderstandings. Lastly, I can change my communication style to one that others like by listening correctly.

If I talk about effective writing, proper writing ensures everyone quickly reads and understands messages. Effective writing also shows the person's concentration, professionalism, and passion for his work. Written communication also works as proof of agreement. So, it shows how vital it is to improve the skills of listening and effective writing in the police field.

Week 4: Verbal And Non-Verbal Communication

This week, I want to discuss the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication in the present era.

As we all know, food, shelter, and clothes are essential for human survival. However, one thing is added: verbal and nonverbal communication.

Non-verbal communication :

Non-verbal communication encompasses using expressions, gestures, and verbal expressions—each of which can express different meanings based on cultural context. Sometimes, good non-verbal communication brings inconvenience/embarrassment. One person may unwittingly insult the other without any idea because facial expressions or verbal communication is inappropriate to the receiver's culture. Therefore, incomprehension of a common culture may sometimes lead to a fight.

Verbal communication:

Communication is essential in every part of the world. Still, it becomes a barrier when one of the participants does not understand the source of communication correctly, which also generates misunderstandings or potential loss of important information. There is a good chance of affecting the whole team when part of the group understands one common language and the other individuals painfully feel excluded.

The enduring focus of this week was to advance my interpersonal strategies and skills, which are not new in the present period of my vocation as well as in my future endeavors. I was faced with a displeased customer during a work crisis who had received the wrong item. I practiced important skills such as being an effective listener and showing empathy to address their concerns. At the same time, I recognized their irritation which allowed a more amiable discussion thereby eliminating the problem. Another crucial thing I discovered at work was that teamwork is an essential part of my work as a cashier. Bringing my companions together for a trouble-free process makes it obligatory to communicate differently and show respect for people. I noticed that sharing tasks and helping each other strongly influence team spirit. In this way, it not only improve customer service but also creates a conducive working environment. Being a to some extent troubled by working in law enforcement having in mind that I have to cooperate with culturally diverse people, I am reminded of the fact that I have to reach out to all the people regardless of their race or religion. The traits of social skills will allow me to cast my net far and wide in the community and to handle. Situations with an understanding and enthusiasm.

This week's experiences Confirmed my conviction that acquiring good social skills is not just for career purposes but is the only way to make a positive difference in people's

Week 6: Interviewing

This week I received mock interviews which gave me a good insight into the interview process and the importance of a successful interview to obtain an operative position within law enforcement. To prepare, I learned about some common questions for interviews about police and rehearsed what my past experiences and even my motivation would look like, only conveying them. Effective preparation is not merely going back and forth between rehearsing answers a hundred times but understanding the role and role’s responsibilities much better than we wondered before.

In the mock interviews, I got constructive feedback from my colleagues for their weaknesses and that gave me areas to improve. For example, I picked up on the importance of nonverbal, positive body language and maintaining eye contact, in short demonstrating to them your interest and enthusiasm about the role. Furthermore, I performed tailoring of response based on the values of community policing, and I did show my devotion to the community with my participation by serving and protecting the public.

Interviewing was known to me as a one-way assessment; however, this experience taught me that it is an opportunity to have a conversation that is worthy beyond that of an assessment. I need to ask the right type of insightful questions that truly show I am interested in the role, as well as the organization. Now as I continue to prepare for my future career, I plan to develop my interviewing skills to effectively communicate my passion and readiness to work in law enforcement.

Team meetings are an important function for me at ARZ Store: we need to stay connected and attend to challenges together. There’s lots of prep behind the scenes—I review the stock levels and any problems, so I can be useful. It’s this preparation that helps me to stay focused and make good contributions, that show I really work well on teams.

Active listening is in my practice during meetings — I take notes in meetings, clarify instructions when given, and offer ideas where they make sense. For example, I once wanted to streamline our stock-checking procedures, which was picked up by everyone on the team in a good way. I also nod to show attentiveness and respect for others’ contributions. This active experience helps me to communicate with professionalism, and across professional environments.

While doing so I make sure to promptly handle tasks after meetings; responsibilities are done with attention to detail. This follow-up process makes me accountable, which is just as important as it will be in my future in law enforcement.

I also think of career fairs and seminars as formal 'meeting' opportunities. I research organizations beforehand, and before I go in, I practice questions about skills and expectations in law enforcement. During these events, I make a professional appearance through eye contact and respectful conversation and follow up afterward to make those connections. This gave me insights, expanded my network and it is a step closer to what I aiming to be: a Canadian police officer.

Right now, it is practicing effective meeting skills; in law enforcement, the future roles will involve clear communication, active engagement together with professionalism, which are at least as important for my own roles.

Week 13: Final Reflection

Thinking about the last few weeks I am reminded that this journey has been a major growth and a learning opportunity. I have used the practical tools that each weekly topic has provided me, all of which I have started using in my academics and profession.

Building my e-portfolio was one of, if not the, most rewarding thing I’ve done as part of this process. It allowed me to put my skills and experiences together so that I could present them professionally and in an organized way. It is now the e-portfolio I can draw from to show potential employers what qualifications I have and a memory of how I’ve progressed throughout this course. When I added elements like my resume, my cover letter, and my weekly reflections I was able to feel accomplished and gain insight into how documenting one’s achievements is valuable.

This project also stressed the need to adjust to a multiracial environment and create perfect social skills. In Canada, I’ve worked and studied, and I’ve seen the value of understanding cultural differences and communicating in a way that can help build positive relationships. These lessons are important to learn before I reach my goal of ultimately becoming a Canadian police officer, a job involving strong communication, empathy, and partnerships.

It was another highlight to learn how to go about the things one would do in professional cases such as interviews and meetings. Interview practicing has helped me gain confidence in preparation for an interview and professional documents have been written to boost my confidence in future opportunities, career-wise. So, I’ve also improved my listening, writing and verbal communication skills and this helped me in my current work at ARZ Store.

I've looked back on this journey, and it's reminded me just how far I've come and just how much I've grown, through building skills that have helped me get to where I wanted to be and move towards the career I want to have. This is not a conclusion, it’s a stepping stone, it gives me incentive to keep learning, to refine my skills, and to move forward towards my aim of becoming a police officer in Canada.
