Intro:

In her talk “The Danger of the Single Story”, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie explores the idea and meaning behind the effects the single story has on society. More specifically, she explains how the single story establishes stereotypes that dehumanizes certain groups and draws the attention to what makes everyone different rather than what brings society together. Adichie states, “The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.” In other words, the single story causes society to limit themselves to their own preconcieved idea of who someone is and what that person represents. (something specific about single story of black experience) Multicultural literature allows us as a society to see beyond the single story and educate ourselves on the pieces that are missing. It allows us to connect to those whom we do not fully understand and gain a deeper knowledge of the full story. Novels such as Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison and The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison allow readers to gain a more complete understanding of the African American experience specifically. Both authors challenege the single story in their novels by showing the complexity and struggles of the African American community.

Body:

Invisible Man:

Introduce “single story” presented in the novel: all African Americans are uncivilized and need the white man to have fulfilled life and success, African Americans cannot be their own person

Explain how people refuse to see “invisible man”

Go into ideas and situations that enable this idea

Grandfathers speech

Bledsoe

Brotherhood

Quotes: Pg. 16- grandfather’s speech "Live with your head in the lion's mouth.
