At a single moment in California, it can be hot and dry in one place and freezing and snowy in another place. The southern part of the state is closer to the equator and is generally warmer than the northern part. On the western side of the state lies the Pacific Ocean. On the eastern side of the state, the Sierra Nevada mountains influence temperature and precipitation patterns.

Prevailing winds influence weather because they affect the speeds and directions of moving air masses. Prevailing winds tend to move west to east over the United States and Canada. These winds bring air masses from the Pacific Ocean toward California. Prevailing winds also drive Ocean surface currents.
