It makes sense that media literacy falls within the more general framework of digital citizenship or digital literacy. I agree that a focus on only media literacy shifts the responsibility onto the individual. Also, it's more than about being able to spot fake news. Media literacy also potentially limits the focus to a formal learning and teaching environment - school, post-school - and generally part of languages and humanities.

I like the 3 pillars of digital citizenship, and this could serve as a useful framework for taking a broad approach, across a number of sectors of society:
-Developing a school level curriculum, which takes an interdisciplinary approach.
- Defining general competencies that normal citizens should have, and creating programmes across all sectors of society to raise awareness.
- Defining a specific set of competencies for professionals who work with children, not only teachers but also social work, counseling, youth workers etc.

For effective implementation of any of these kinds of programmes, there needs to be a general awareness of the importance of digital citizenship, drawing attention to the basic concept that technology is not neutral and that critical engagement is needed. My impression is that while in Europe and the US there is growing awareness of the need for critical engagement with digital technology. However in my country, South Africa, it seems that the emphasis is on access and competence in using technology. Awareness and the importance of the 'Rights online' pillar needs to be introduced.

I really enjoyed exploring your OER Deirdre. It was very engaging and I enjoyed the variety of activities.

There is a big push on Digital Literacy within the Scottish Curriculum, but, in my opinion, the wider discussion on what digital citizenship/digital literacy encompasses has been missing. This is where your OER helps.

Critical analysis of what digital citizenship entails by practitioners is a must - I see this as the building bricks to developing the curriculum in an effective and meaningful way.

As mentioned in the other post, the 3 pillars approach is a great frame work for starting a conversation with practitioners, and I would see this as being especially useful in opening up a dialogue in regards to digital citizenship in schools.

I enjoyed the exploration of 'fake news' and see the challenges of social media as one of the biggest potentials for learning. We are encouraging our students and being encouraged ourselves to have a critical eye!

Digital citizenship is complex and in my own context as a primary teacher, it needs to be meaningfully integrated within the curriculum. This is no easy task. For teachers to be able develop a curriculum that encompasses digital citizenship, they must first get to grips with what it entails!
