During the battle most of the King's warriors flee, except for Wiglaf. Together, Wiglaf and Beowulf slay the dragon. Beowulf gets fatally wounded. Wiglaf gets the treasure by himself so the King can see it before he dies. Grendel's mother senses him coming down to her territory and grabs him. She tried to hurt Beowulf but his chain mail would not be harmed. He then grabs a sword made and blessed by a giant's magic and slices the water witch's neck. After this he finds Grendel's body and beheads him. On the shore Gets and Hrothgar were anxiously waiting for Beowulf's return to the surface. As Beowulf rises from the water he is praised by the Geats.

Choosing to fight Grendel in hand-to-hand combat, Beowulf wrestles the demon into submission and eventually tears off his arm at the shoulder. Mortally wounded, Grendel flees into the wilderness and dies.

Beowulf- the hero who beats the monster and goes on to kill its mother. 
Grendel- Grendel is the protagonist for this part of the story, he is the demon that terrorizes  the kingdom.

Beowulf agrees to help them in their battle against Grendel,  he brings his men to help as well. They are called to the king to explain their intentions and ask for a night of shelter. Beowulf doesn't sleep that night and plans his attack on Grendel.

Geats- men who go to Denmark to look for the help of Beowulf
Grendel- feared in all Heorot except Beowulf, terrorized citizens
Healfdone's son- king Hrothgar, welcomed Beowulf when they planned to defeat Grendel

At night Grendel would hear how happy the people were during the day, so during the night Grendel went to see what they did in hall. When he got there though they were all asleep and with greed driving Grendel's claws he snatched up thirty men and smashed them. out of all of these men the only men Grendel could not kill was the king because he was protected by god himself. The king sent all the people he could to try and kill this monster, but they all never came back. For twelve winters Grendel terrorized this town always watching them, but never seen by the townspeople of Herot, and always striking at night. Eventually the council of the king got desperate enough to turn to the devil for guidance on how to drive out this monster, but neither god nor the devil could help them.

Grendel: the monster that terrorizes the town of Herot
Hrothgar: the king that is protected by God himself
 Hrothgar's warriors: try and kill Grendel but never succeed  townspeople of Herot: killed and terrorized by Grendel
