These are all important because it shaped the Byzantine Empire from 867-1204 and did affect modern day history.  Basil I was a Byzantine emperor who founded the Macedonian Empire, and a Greek law code called Basilica, this helped shape the Byzantine empire and created laws for citizens to live by. Basil II, Byzantine emperor (976–1025), who extended imperial rule in the Balkans (notably Bulgaria), Mesopotamia, Georgia, and Armenia and increased his domestic authority by attacking the powerful landed interests of the military aristocracy and of the church. He also reconquered land from the Muslims who had stolen it from him. The Great Schism caused the Catholic church to split into two different churches. At the time it created more differences between eastern and western Rome. Today Russia is mostly eastern orthodox and western europe is primarily roman catholic. Crusaders invaded Constantinople in 1200 and ended up taking the city down alone with Constantine in 1204 and held it for the next 50 years. The invasion caused the spread of Islam into what is now modern day Turkey after the Turks conquered Constantinople from the crusaders.
