RECYCLING SY;STEM ’LOOOP’ HELPS H&M TRANSFORM UNWANTED GARMENTS INTO NEW FASHION FAVOURITES

 

Looop is the world’s first in-store recycling system turning old garments into new ones. In just eight steps, Looop shreds your old garment and knits a new one from the old fibres. No water, no dye. The only thing added is some sustainably sourced material to strengthen the yarn. This has to be done since the mechanical shredding shortens the fibres of your old garment. 

A run-through of the eight steps turning old garments into new: 

(1) Cleaning First, your old garment is sprayed with ozone to remove any microorganisms. (2) Shredding The garment is then shredded down into small chunks of fabric fibres.（3） Filtering  Shredded chunks are filtered to remove dirt, and extra virgin material is added for strength. （4）Carding  The clean fibre mix is straightened into a fibre web and then pulled into slivers.  （5） Drawing  Multiple fibre slivers are combined to create even stronger, thicker slivers. （6） Spinning  The thick fibre slivers are spun to create a single yarn thread. （7） Twisting  Single yarn threads are doubled and twisted together to increase their strength.   （8） Knitting The yarn is then knitted into a new, ready-to-wear design.

H&M wants to lead the change towards a sustainable fashion industry. By 2030 H&M aim for all our materials to be either recycled or sourced in a more sustainable way.To fight climate change, H&M need to change fashion. One way of doing this is circular solutions. If we use, for example, a recycled cotton shirt to make a new shirt there’s no need to grow more cotton. We can just use what’s already been produced. That’s circular fashion.

Denim production can be harmful to the environment, but it doesn’t have to be. Made of 20% recycled denim, 20% sustainably sourced viscose and 60% organic cotton, our recycled denim reduces our environmental footprint. This means less water, less carbon dioxide and fewer chemicals for our planet. “Every part of the jean, from the red tab to the thread, is carefully calibrated to maximize their potential for a second life.”

The open-source platform is organised into three categories – Care, Repair, and Upgrade – and offers an ever-growing library of information about repairing and maintaining garments and accessories, delivered as video tutorials, diagrams and detailed instructions. Each of the tutorials include techniques that are accessible and available to everyone, using resources such as household bleach, cardboard and basic sewing kits.

Alongside this, Fixing Fashion is creating community around the concept of fixing and upgrading clothing, beginning with a dedicated chat on messaging platform Discord. ‘I didn’t want to support the linear way of producing and say recycling is the answer,’ comments Alicia Minnaard, designer and co-founder of Fixing Fashion. ‘Repairing, upgrading and actually caring for clothing is what’s really missing in fashion.'

With growing awareness around sustainability in fashion, consumers are getting creative and adopting DIY Dressing behaviours to reinvent their wardrobes.

Working with pollution upcycling company Graviky Labs, Pangaia is utilising the company’s Air-Ink innovation – a water-based black ink formulated using carbon-capture technology. The ink is created using an extraction process, whereby air pollution particles are transformed into different grades of inks, dispersions and coatings. Pangaia will use the Air-Ink for black lettering and graphics on its capsule collection of recycled cotton hoodies, t-shirts and trousers.

The eco-conscious nature of the collaboration is also reflected in the collection’s logo: an infinity symbol that represents circularity in fashion. For Graviky Labs, teaming up with the apparel brand means it is able to expand its reach and continue raising awareness around its carbon negative solution. 

We've also discovered how pollution is being used in the luxury sector, with companies such as Aether diamonds redirecting carbon to create lab-grown diamonds.

Design students Hugo Maupetit and Vivian Fischer of L'École de Design Nantes Atlantique put forward the idea as an imagined partnership between skate brand Vans and gum company Mentos. The duo propose collecting chewing gum through gum boards affixed to lampposts, after which the gum would be cleaned and mixed with a secret ingredient to stabilise it. After being stained with natural dye to form the base of the wheels, they suggest the material is machined into skateboard wheels and stamped with the brands' logos.

‘Our initiative is supposed to clean the streets in a sustainable way,’ reads a statement from the designers. ‘We invented a system that will transform used wheels and turn them into new ones. No more waste is created, and the material stays in use.'

In a similar vein, circular economy company Pentatonic last year introduced The Pebble, a re-usable cutlery and dining set made from recycled CDs.
