Karen Jeppe was an upstander during the Armenian genocide by helping Armenians out when most people did not. During the genocide, Jeppe had gotten ill, so when she returned to Aleppo in 1921 she,” found employment for Armenian widows by establishing orphanages, schools, medical clinics, and workrooms, then worked to rescue two thousand Armenian women and children scattered in the area”(Wikipedia) This shows how Karen Jeppe is an upstander during the Armenia Genocide. This also shows how Jeppe saved lives and helped others in need by taking small steps. The lesson readers can take from this is, small steps can have big outcomes. This quotation is one of the many examples that show how Karen Jeppe resisted.

The lesson that Martin Nielmoller is trying to teach his readers is that if people do not speak out for others then no one will be there to speak out for you. An example of this can be found in terrible things, when terrible things was coming and going they were taking a new group each time, and every time the remaining groups would not speak out. At the very end, when the last group was taken away, no one was there to speak out for them. This shows also how by not speaking out there is less of a chance that the oppressor will stop. Speaking out in situations like this will most likely stop most of the terrible things happening in the world today. This shows why Martin Neilmoller is trying to teach us the lesson of how speaking up for others will benifit you in the future.

Anne's choice to save the Star of David is an act of resistance because it shows that she will not let someone else change the meaning of the star in her eyes. This is shown after Peter makes a comment on how she's been branded with it, Anne says, "I know. I know. But after all, it is the Star of David, isn't it?"(458). This shows how she knows she's been branded with it but it still means the same thing to her as it did before they made her wear it. This also shows how she is proud to be Jewish. Even if Peter changed the way he looked at the Star of David, Anne did not since she knew that it was a part of her and her religion. This shows that she resisted the change in how people viewed her own religion and herself by not changing her view on the symbol of her religion.
