The territory of Santiago de Chile stretches to the Andes, and a growing number of wealthy residents seek to build their homes on the foothills of the Andes in search of fresh air and green spaces. To limit the sprawl of cities, no construction is allowed above 1000 meters above sea level.

Sebastián Irarrázaval (born 1967) is a Chilean architect with postgraduate studies in urbanism at the Architectural Association in London. He was recognized in 1999 by the Association of Architectural Offices (AOA) as the most outstanding young architect. A local architect has become one of those who creates projects of unusual houses of complex shape, which are designed to harmoniously fit into a complex topographic landscape.

Sebastián Irarrázaval created the concept of the Casa Caterpillar house using 12 shipping containers connected in different planes into a complex spatial structure where each room is open to light and air. The area of this container house is 350 square meters, and its construction took only 8 months. Such short construction time is one of the many advantages of prefabricated structures. Its cost also turned out to be a third cheaper than the cost of building from traditional materials.

It should be noted that unlike other houses built from containers, this one does not apply to houses that are 100% made up of containers alone. Casa Caterpillar is a hybrid house, the base of which is partially a conventional monolithic reinforced concrete structure.

First, the slope was cleared of loose rocks and clay, then the foundation and living quarters of the lower tier of the house were poured from concrete. From there, an open staircase leads to a large outdoor area that acts as a console with a swimming pool. Massive steel anchor supports are installed to support the upper level consisting of shipping containers.

The shipping containers from which this house was built were delivered by trucks to the place in their original form. Then, already at the construction site, window and door openings were cut out in them, each was installed in its place and welded to each other. Polyurethane was used as thermal insulation (to protect against heat), which was sprayed on the surface of all steel containers. A shell consisting of metal plates was installed on top of the polyurethane. These plates were specially left uncoated and not protected from corrosion.

According to the architect's plan, in a dry climate, steel will slowly rust extremely slowly, but thanks to rusting, the house will acquire a color close to the natural color of the surrounding rocks. The interior consists of unprotected and corroded I-beams, sheet metal, polished concrete and wide wooden boards (of which the floors are made). To cheer up, the interior space has a large number of windows, openings in the ceilings (both glazed and open), which allow you to feel the coolness of mountain breezes and eliminate the need for air conditioning.
