If we tell them they have to wait in the office if they are more than 10 minutes late, there are a few issues:
1) They may just ditch 1st period altogether and take longer to get here.
2) They will miss instruction and homework, so any class time missed is detrimental to their grade.
3) Keeping them in the office will require someone to watch them instead of monitoring the campus.

I also came from a district which had a three tardies = one absence policy. The tardies in my first hour are from the same students, but only one brings food/drinks to class. I do not allow them to have anything at their desk. I think you will be inviting a battle with parents if you throw food/drinks away. There are obviously some issues with the tardy policy not being enforced - the busses are also an issue.

We used to have Saturday School as a consequence once a week, now it's once a month. A student can be tardy 20 times by then. Now I have to contact the parent after 3 tardies and I don't have room on my plate for more so I've been allowing students to come tardy with no consequence as I'm sure many other teachers have, which is why the tardies are out of control. We need to reel it back in. I was told there was going to be some kind of form letter I could email to parents but I never got it. Students know nothing is being done and they are taking advantage of it.

Take the drinks and the food. I do this already. Eat breakfast before you get to school, you know, like everyone else does. As far as parents, they are part of the problem, as they are allowing this bad behavior. I don't think it will be an issue because, at the end of the day, they are the same parents complaining that little Jonny is failing. At least this way, we eliminate an excuse for them to fail further. I also like the 3 tardies = 1 absence. We had this back when I was in school and it made the consequences more real for students. It also puts the idea into parents heads that we mean business. Right now, it's a joke to both the student and the parent/enabler

What is the use of a policy if it is not regularly enforced or works for that matter. Things have become very relaxed and it shows in students lack of adherence to rules. Removing drinks and food is not a means to an end. If you want them to care there needs to be harsher consequences and we need to stick with it whatever the policy is. I agree to the 3 tardies is an absence. I also like some of the policies from the sweep post. The disruptions are very minor. I would rather have them in class getting at least some instruction, but will not back track until the last 10 minutes of class if I am not helping other students with the task at hand or will have them ask my "tutors" that are finished to help them catch up if time permits.
