Carnival Overture, Op. 92 by Antonin Dvorak

The program said that this piece was meant to tell a story of "a lonely, contemplative wanderer reaching at twilight a city where a festival is in full swing" (Program). The beginning was so exciting, that it felt as if I was watching a carnival. I could almost see elephants and people swinging from a trapeze. The song slowed down and I imagined what it would be like to wander from stall to stall. Then it truly picked up, as if the finale was happening. It was one of my favorite pieces.

Upon hearing this piece, I thought it sounded very Cuban. When I read the program, I realized I was right. I could tell that hitting the note on the beat wasn't the aim, because it felt very free flowing and organic. The song made me want to dance.
