The drug is a schedule II controlled substance,  Prescription is needed for use (in capsule form) , and should not be combined with alcohol. Common street names for the drug are:

However, when used illegally, Adderall is used to create rewarding feelings of euphoria and  intense invigoration. However, after these effects have worn off, the more harmful ones may set in, such as fatigue, feelings of depression and lethargy, increased irritability, and decreased ability to concentrate. Although he researched and wrote about the drug itself, he didn't discover its psychological effects. Decades later in 1929, Gorden Alles injected himself with the substance to experience its psychological effects. He was trying to discover a more effective drug to treat asthma and colds. When he was recording the effects, he noticed that staying awake and alert was a common occurrence, and noted that he had a "rather sleepless night". The German Nazi soldiers and the Allies Forces had also used this drug to stimulate themselves. The Nazis had to march extreme distances, in which the drug would allow them to stay alert. When the drug became available for over- the- counter use (in the form of a decongestant inhaler) , however, many people other than the intended audience were buying it: college students.

Since then, the misuse hasn't seemed to be declining, as according to the "Monitoring the Future Survey of adolescent drug abuse", "There were 21 million stimulant prescriptions in 2011 for patients aged 10 to 19 years old, out of a total population of 25 million children aged 12-17" ("The Effects of Adderall Use"). Because of widespread usage of the drug for studying, the drug has been categorized as a 'study drug'.

Without a valid prescription, possession of the drug is prohibited for the general public.

- For a first offence possession (even one pill), one can be charge a $1000 fine and/or up to a year in prison, with increasing charges as the offenses increase
