I must encourage these students to recognize their achievements, respect their talents, and be kind to themselves so they are able to build their self-esteem and become the best version of themselves. As a student who has a lot on their plate, it is easy to get distracted by friends, pressures, and other distractions. My job is to help keep the student on track and to help them succeed, mentally, emotionally, and physically. I am able to interact with the students, help them stay on track, and see the bigger picture by investing in what they want, how to get them there, and following the path they've outlined. As a young adolescent, it can be easy to go with the flow and not look to a future until after high school. As a school counselor, I am able to help set my students up for success; sitting down with my students and showing them that they are capable of creating their own opportunities; setting realistic goals, believing in themselves, being willing to work hard, be open, and of course, be open to failure. A counselor must be able to exercise failure as a good thing; it creates more opportunities and the ability to move life in the direction they want. Changing routes in a path can be hard to do, but sometimes, is necessary. My job is to help the students I see to make changes if that is best for them. Even if they do not realize it, a change can make the biggest difference. Because motivation to change is based on desire over cost, I have to make sure I am using utilizing the situation well and how I can encourage the motivation to change, even if they do not see it. A counselor can only guide and not make the decision for them, however, I must be able to access the situation correctly and encourage the motivation to change even if it's hard to see at the moment. As a student counselor, I have to ensure to my student's failure is going to happen; we cannot avoid it. Sometimes, you may study for HOURS and still end with a grade that feels like a loss. It is inevitable. Instead of running away from loss, we must accept it. As a counselor, it is my job to help them know that failure and loss do not define a human being. Instead of seeing it as a loss, I will help my students see that 'loss' can turn into motivation. The fear they may have can be a motivation to succeed. I have the power to help shift my student's negative thinking into something positive they can take with them in school, as well as the rest of their life.

For me, I must be able to find a friend in the school that I can take a load off and enjoy my job with coworkers. Constantly working can cause burnout; it is important to make sure as I mentor these children, I am also taking time to take breaks, breath, and enjoy my coworkers. As well for my students, I must encourage them to find some fun in school; find friends that support them and whom they enjoy being around.
