The Fair Trade movement promotes equitable trade worldwide. It originated after World War II with Edna Ruth Byler’s support for artisans. Certification began with coffee in 1988 and expanded. Fair Trade USA, founded in 1998, split from Fairtrade International in 2012 to broaden its impact. Both organizations empower farmers and workers for sustainable development.

Chocolate, one of the world's favorite treats, faces an uncertain future as cocoa farming remains unrewarding despite its tough working conditions. Similarly, coffee, a globally popular beverage, relies on 25 million smallholders who produce 80% of the supply. Cotton, the world's oldest commercial crop, remains vital to the textile industry, while the cut flower trade has grown into a major global industry worth over $100 billion annually. Meanwhile, gold, a symbol of love, power, and wealth, hides a far less glamorous reality beneath its shine.

Five companies that claim fair trade

Many companies claim to follow fair trade principles, ensuring ethical sourcing, fair wages, and sustainable practices. However, not all of these claims hold up under scrutiny. While legitimate fair trade certifications guarantee that producers, especially in developing countries, receive fair compensation and work in safe conditions, some brands use misleading labels to appear more ethical than they genuinely are. Consumers should research certifications like Fair trade International or Rainforest Alliance to verify a product's authenticity. Ultimately, genuine fair trade practices support economic equity, environmental sustainability, and improved working conditions for farmers and artisans worldwide.

In addition to the Fairtrade price, the Fairtrade Premium is an extra sum of money that goes into a communal fund, which farmers and workers can use to improve their communities. This additional funding allows them to invest in projects that enhance their social, economic, and environmental conditions. They have the freedom to decide how to allocate the funds, whether for building schools, improving healthcare, developing infrastructure, or adopting sustainable farming practices. By giving producers control over these resources, the Fairtrade Premium empowers communities to create long-term, meaningful improvements that benefit both workers and future generations.
