In 1918, OT reconstruction aids focused on helping disabled soldiers develop occupational skills to stay busy while they were on bedrest or unable to partake in military actions. This connects to me because in Boy Scouts we took basketry and woodcarving merit badge classes. These occupations were fun and possible to do our first year in Scouts, without needing to have knowledge about Boy Scouts itself. Similar to the reconstruction aids teaching their crafts, merit badge leaders would teach the new scouts skills on how to properly make a chair using basketry and weaving skills, in addition to carving designs in wood using wood carving techniques. It was kind of thrilling!

1915-1920 Eleanor Clark Stagle worked on developing the first professional school that provided OT classes for students. This connected with my interest in OT education and the hope to one day open up my own OT program. Similar to Stagle, a natural born leader, I consider myself a leader in the fact that I try to inspire others to pursue their goals.

I enjoyed learning about the AOTA conference's that occurred in 1937. It was great seeing the vintage photo of the booths lined up, and hearing about the opportunity for people outside the OT field to learn about occupational therapy. This connects with me because I want to go to the AOTA conference in November this year. I think it would be a great opportunity to learn more about my future profession, and meet individuals interested in the same things as I am!

I feel like I did not agree with the accelerated OT program implemented in 1942. After taking a 12-month program to become an OT, I think that it would be difficult to become a successful professional. After going to undergrad for 4 years, it was still very difficult to think about running into a full-time job and being prepared for it. I think that after 12 months, it would be possible to be great as an OT, but it would be difficult to understand the theory behind OT and a lot of the necessary skills needed to provide patient care.

1960s- I think that it is really great how OTs began to help their clients with their everyday activities. It makes sense based on our readings today why practitioners would work with clients in social and psychological aspects. I make a connection with this because as a future OT, it is important to take a holistic approach in order to help the client the most. For example, building assistive devices in order to help others do their daily occupations!

New programs were innovated during the 1970s and 1980s. I connect with this because it appears to be close to the current OT model. By being more holistic and helping patients outside the hospital, new work programs were developed, more assistive technology was created, and more time was dedicated to geriatrics. By constantly changing with the times and providing for the people, it displays how much OTs care about the population that they are treating!

In 1997 the passage of the Federal Balanced Budget Act did not help OTs because they placed caps on patient care and what an OT can do. I think that it is a bummer that public policy has such a big impact on OTs and what services they can provide. Simply because politicians feel that patients do not need specialized services, they can take away the budget for their help. It seems like a rollercoaster of ups and downs for OT clients, since it can instantly change overnight.

Even though I am happy with where Occupational Therapy has gone, I think that it is underappreciated still as a profession. From having 6 members to 60,000 members in the last 100 years, the profession has increased substantially. However OT is such a desired field, I cannot believe it has not grown more. Society needs more assistance from OT services, whether it is from children to adults. I am excited to see what the numbers are in 60 years from now, and hopefully it can be 600,000! There are almost 4 million nurses employed around the U.S., and I believe OT's numbers can grow also!

I think that it is a bummer that the first OT women had to wear clothes that were unattractive in order to ensure their safety from men that they worked on and took care of. In an ideal world, everyone should feel safe in their workplace, and not have to consider dressing down, or in a full body dress in order to not be attractive around other people of the opposite sex. I hope that nowadays it is different and women are able to dress how they like, or in a uniform that is more 'normal.' I disconnect with the idea that women feel threatened in their own work places.
