Title:
What does the title create?
- The title Brick Lane, creates a dull imagination for the reader. We picture, a lane that only has bricks no people, or a sunny sky.
It is the heart of Bangladeshi-Syheti community and is also called Banglatown.
- Makes you question the title
forexample on the first page "The sign screwed to the brickwork was in stiff English capitals and the curlicues beneath were Bengali. NO DUMPING: NO PARKING. NO BALL GAMES 


Message:
- it conveys an image that she is not thrilled with her life but she does not complain about it. 
she doesn't have much of a life outside of her home.

she also has a desire to learn english. but traditionally it would be looked down upon. (reference)

talks about how the immigrants are treated, not considering their status....not differing them from each other-(after landing his degree doesn't hold any importance)

(Age; appearance, family situation, background, education, job, language, thoughts, opinions) Nazneen:Nazneen is a young woman, she is a “stay-at-home”- wife, and she is married to Chanu who she is not in love with. “She tried to imagine what it would be like to fall in love” -Last page l. 12She is 18 years old(p. 148 l. 16m where chanu talks on the phone)Nazneen is the main character: The story is told through her POW(148. l. 30)Nazneen is not developing in this part of the novel, maybe she develops throughout the whole story, but in this part she is quite static. According to Chanu, nazneen has a medium height, and that she is quite narrow, but still wide enough to carry a child. Not tall. Not short. Around five foot two. Hips are a bit narrow but wide enough, to carry children. things considered, I am satisfied p. 148 l. 14 AllDr. Azad:Dr. Azad is a very close friend of Chanu. He seems to believe he is very important and smart. He tries to keep away from the brick lane area and doesn’t bring his family there. Quote : “'This week I saw two of our young men in a very sorry state,' said the doctor. 'I told them straight, this is your choice: stop drinking alcohol flow, or by Eid your liver will be finished.Ten years ago this would be unthinkable.Two in one week! But flow our children are copying what they see here,going to the pub, to nightclubs. Or drinking at home in their bedrooms where their par- 10 ents think they are perfectly safe. The problem is our community is not properly educated a bout these things.' Dr Azad drank a glass of water down in one long draught and poured himself another.”Chanu:Chanu is a Bangladeshi man, who lives in London. He is 20 years older than Nazneen, and are married to her by their parents because they are both from Bangladeshi. He demands Nazneen to cook and clean, and he is the one with job, so a traditional husband (“from 1950’s”). He is not very kind to Nazneen, ex (p. 148 l. 9)'No,' said Chanu. 'I would not say so. Not beautiful, but not so ugly either. The face is broad, big forehead. Eyes are a bit too close together.' Nazneen put her hand up to her head. It was true.Tattoo lady:Lives across the block. She sits in her chair all day smoking and now drinking. Chanu says she is a hell’s angel. Described as ugly.
