Step 1: Trust vs. Mistrust

Erik Erikson's first stage of psychosocial development, beginning at around 18 months and being the most important time frame, this stage will shape a child's perspective of the world alongside with their personality. This stage is the opener to trust for children with either their own family members, caregivers, or even other people in general. As an infant, my mother would take me to my former caregiver mostly every day since my parents had to work a lot. She would tell me that when she first started taking me (at around 3/4 months old) with my caregiver I would cry every time she would leave me in the morning. And my caregiver would tell my mother that the only time I wouldn't cry was when I was asleep or eating. However, this conflict was resolved over time as I would spend more time with my caregiver and develop trust as the days went by. I would know she would want to hand me a toy to play with, or give me food to eat, and clothes to change in which is what overtime built the trust.

Erikson's second stage of development, occurring between 18 months to around 2 or 3 years, children incorporate their trust in the world and begin to develop recognition of independence and self-control. This stage is important to opening the door for concept of self of a child and their preferences. I had two older cousins (one two years older and the other four years older) and my mother and aunt use to get together very often when we were kids. At that age I was building my preference in toys I liked to play with, food I would like to eat, and even clothes that I thought felt more comfortable on me. With the exposure my older cousins persuaded on me, it built a lining of what I would prefer at that age.

Erikson's third stage in development, happen around between ages 3 and 5, children begin to dive into their own potential and control of decision making through social interaction or direct play. Children question to themselves a lot if they are good of if they're bad. I myself built the understanding from my preferences and socializing that I experience, alongside the help from my parents. They would see how I was playing with my toys, that being violent or friendly with them, and my imagination that I had. I would play with a lot of fighting game toys or hot wheels, and depending on the aggression I used would be the level my parents would help me understand what was good or what was bad.

This is the fourth stage in Erikson's theory of development, occurs during childhood between the ages of around 6 and 11 years, and in this stage, children build competence alongside with trust in their abilities with performing difficult tasks. Children learn to trust their own skills in the talks they are performing and build their own knowledge. I came across this stage at around the age of 8, when I started to take soccer more competitively. My brother was the one who coached me previously for the sport and saw that spark that I didn't see in myself, so he recommended to my father that I should join a travel club for the sport. And he signed me up not even a few weeks later. I incorporated my own trust and confidence with the skills I had practice and more skills that I would learn. Figuring out how to play tactically and efficiently on the field with my teammates, I played competitively for about 7 years.

Erikson's fifth stage in development, happens during adolescence between ages of about 12 and 18, and in this stage, young growing adolescents adventure out on their independence and sense of who they are. This is the era where preteens through later teenage years learn of self. I encountered this stage with the eye opener of "Who am I?" at the ate of 13 when I was in junior high school. That is where I started to think of who I wanted to be to be either popular or unknown in school, cool or laid back, violent or passive, the style of clothing I wanted to display, my personality, and overall, who I was. It wasn't until my experience of high school that built the set stones of who I wanted to be or define myself as who I am and understand the person I wanted to display to the world. With all the classes I was in, the groups I would hang out with, the sports I played, the decisions I made, the whole high school experience has set a stone of who I am.

Stage 6: Intimacy vs. Isolation

This is Erikson's sixth stage in development, takes place during young adulthood around ages between 19 and 40 (large gap). Confliction of forming intimate relationships or loving others/receiving love occurs in this stage. This is where people will venture their intimacy in relationships with others. I encountered this stage just about a year ago. I didn't date throughout all of high school, and when I got out, I wished to seek for love, yes, I know it was at a young age. A year ago, I met someone very special, and took interest in her. I got to know her as the months went by, I met her family, and started to understand who she was as a person. The bond and relationship attached to me so softly that I knew I had fell in love, and a while after we had met, I asked her out on a date. The later after that, I asked her if should like to be my girlfriend and share an intimate relationship between us, she said yes. Our relationship has definitely made me more assure of my own positivity, and being able to show affectionate love.

Erikson's seventh stage of development, happens during middle adulthood between ages 40 and 65. In this stage middle aged adults try to help or even create whatever outlast them, could be parenting a child/children or contributing to society, asking themselves, "What can i give back to the world?" Mainly happens later on in life, but it centers around your thoughts of if you gave enough back. I have yet to encounter this stage, but I know without a doubt I will be giving back to the world. I want to work to become a high school teacher and lead the future generations into a greater light of their society. I wish one day to have my own family and nurture my children into becoming their own definition of success that can help further themselves, as it's different for every person. I also want to work with charities and programs that help children and the future generations. As time goes on, I will do my part to give back to the world.

Stage 8: Integrity vs. Despair

Erikson's final stage of development integrity versus despair, happens at around age 65 and ends at death. In this stage, people center themselves on the question of their lives whether they lived a meaningful/satisfying life, reflection is heavily happening in this stage. "Was my life meaningful?" Is the main question encountered heavily in this stage. I know definitely with the goals and ambitions I wish to achieve, that I will live a meaningful life as I already point meaning into it right now. My experiences will expose me to the idea that I lived a life with meaning, that being the work I did, the goals I put on myself to succeed, the relationships I had, and the good I put into this world. Even now, I know I am living a meaningful life, and wish to only deepen that thought as I grow older.
