I slowly climbed the plastic steps to the diving board, imaging opera music lilting in the background like they have in dramatic movies. The board felt rough against my bare feet as I walked to the end. Then, curling my toes over the edge, I looked down, down, down, to the rippling, blue water far below. It shone and sparkled in the sunlight, like it was covered with diamonds. The tangy aroma of chlorine stung my nose.

1.
The evening sky stretched above us like an abstract watercolor, purple grey clouds blending with the burnished gold of the sun as it set over the distant bay. The air was crisp this time of day, the little midday heat vanishing as though it was never there, scurrying down the busy streets and into overgrown alleys. This was a good time of day. Yellow-orange spears of light pushing against the monochrome clouds, cold grey overhead and below, stretching into the sea, broken apart by sunsets and car lights and the warm glow of cafes. Above the city hovered an interesting in-between, a place of observance. A twilight world between sky and earth, perched precariously on top of the concrete tiers of a parking garage.

2.
Landing a role is seeing the searchlight in the midst of the storm. The beam of a lighthouse when the world is set on bringing you down. It’s being told, “You’re good enough, you’re valuable, we care.” It’s being part of something so perfect and beautiful, so utterly magnificent as to become a reality vivid enough that for a moment, a night, a breath, you become something else. And sometimes, just sometimes, you find that lighthouse at the point in your life, in your hurricane of a life, exactly when you need it most. I certainly did.

The house, atop a small hill, entered my vision in the same way that an old friend does. The upstairs windows glittered in the noontime sun, which also imbued in the crimson walls a sort of radiance. Both the rough concrete stairs and the asphalt driveway invited me up their surprisingly steep paths, overgrown with foliage. And then, hidden from the street, was the gently sloping backyard. The lush green carpet of the lawn still sparkled with the remnants of the morning dew.

I never felt so disappointed in myself, but I had to know what loss felt like because it comes with everything. I had to know what it felt like because I needed to push myself to become better and handle myself in that type of situation if it ever comes again. It was a big learning curve for me. I lower my music sheet and try to focus my eyes on one of the alphabet letters hung on the wall, but I can’t read what letter I am looking at. The singing around me becomes this overwhelming murmur. Suddenly I can hear my heart pounding in my ears. I see a bright indigo light, which it engulfs my vision, I close my eyes. An unknown feeling slips inside of me. It feels like clouds, like flowing water, like dew on a flower. Like rest. I search my mind and find a name for it. Tranquility. And then the music stops. A deep silence takes its place, one of which I cannot find the words to describe.

Just enough of the fiery leaves had fallen to create a soft autumnal blanket that surrounded the tress but enough of them were still on the branches that you could appreciate the turning of the season. Bird song filled the air adding to the whistling of the soft morning wind blowing through the trees. In the distance, you could hear the caw of seagulls calling to their brethren and the faint sounds of people starting their days.

I have been waiting to go to this camp since I was in kindergarten. About 5 minutes after I got there in walks this girl did not know. I had never seen her at its sister camp before, so I went over to introduce myself; she was amazing. I thought she was so cool and super amazing and awesome. We became somewhat friends, and I tried to take every chance I got to hang out with her, but I didn't learn her name until the second last day at camp because I heard someone call her name. I was not very good at names; when I was younger her name was Lexie or at least that is what she wanted to be called.

Arriving at the airport, we drove past the main terminal and to the cargo pick up area.

We parked and made our way to the entrance. It was beginning to get dark by this point and there were lot’s of people the parking lot but what was more interesting was how many dogs there were. Big dogs, little dogs, playful, barking, sniffing dogs. They were utilizing what ever small amount of grass was available in the parking lot. People were exiting the building with crates of dogs and cats, bunnies and other small critters. My parents got in line and the rest of us took some seats along the wall, watching all the animals come and go from a mysterious back room. After what felt like hours, we were escorted outside and over to a large garage door.

A man carrying a large crate came out and asked, “Are you ready to meet your puppy?”

My eyes were as wide as the moon and my mom turned to me and said,

“Happy birthday Lucky, meet our new puppy Rumi.”

Most of the noise was coming from the eight of us kids who were paraphrasing exclamations like, “Oh, this is so cool!” or “Woah, look at that!” We were quickly told to quiet down, however. When we did, we heard that the lone noise was coming from a woman speaking on the floor below us. We quietly crept down the gradual steps and peered over the railing. Below us was an orderly sea of upwards of two-hundred people, all in suits and formal clothing. Most of them were sitting in rows of pews that were configured in semicircles around a wooden podium, each one higher than the one in front of it. It looked like a miniature, 250-year-old gladiator stadium.

I slid off the edge, and when I looked down, I could see a clear landing spot. The drop itself though, was not as bad as I feared, but not a simple fall. Me protecting myself was the top priority.
I landed with a loud crunch, the spot I landed at was beautiful. It was caved in by cliffs too tall to climb, there was a log that stretched out into the lake. The water was incredible, I put my hand into the lake, ice cold. There was no sound except for the water lightly hitting the land. I felt isolated, alone, and it wasn’t just a feeling, I actually was stranded.

Lev C. She commanded the whole of first grade with a pair of sharp blue eyes, wrapped heavily in liquid eyeliner, and winged so strongly that she seemed from my angle, to be some other worldly personage, sent down by the angels themselves to punish and purify the misbehaving, or rebellious 7 year olds of this earth. These eyes were key, made huge by the excess makeup, they would twitch about the room. Leering down from never less than four inch heels, taking in every movement, every pencil scratch and coat adjustment, absorbed by those bulging icy orbs. When, inevitably some act of insurgency was committed, some note passed, or paper ball thrown in the direction of the waste basket, she would come screeching down from the sky’s, guns a blazing, immaculately manicured talons glinting in the weak fluorescent light, a blonde-haired angel of death swooping in from the heavens to wreak punishment onto the 4’4 sinners of Edmonds Elementary School.

The whistle blew and we all started running, we ran for about 30 seconds before we heard sounds of electronic motors spitting out bbs. We ran fast enough were we secured the town without any resistance at all (due to us running much faster than them). Me and my friend Ben took position on a hill shooting down on the enemies trying to push up the hill and regain some ground. When a sniper took out an ally nearby who yelled hit and walked back to the respawn. Me and Ben dropped down behind the logs that had been stacked up for cover so that we would not get hit also. Our team was trying to advance down the hill into the second smaller town but there was too much enemy resistance and our allies kept getting hit and walking back to the respawn.

The windows overlooked New York city and I spent hours gazing out with wonder. You could see people walking on the sidewalk below, they all looked like small ants. I then began to ponder if this is what we looked like to the birds soaring through the sky every day. I looked out at the horizon admiring the beautiful buildings. I smiled at the fact that many people were probably looking out of their windows too, enjoying the beauty of the splendid city. Although I do find humanity to be upsetting at times, I am never ceased to be amazed at what we can create.

You walk out the big doors that lead you to a pleasant shine through the rolling hills, the sun trying to peak out. As the sun tries to climb over the hills the mist that sets in the air slowly rises, until it disappears. When your eyes follow the property of Wade King, you can see a freshly cut field along with soccer nets equally aligned and ready to be played on. While I was walking down the steep hill to get to the field, I see my friends already kicking the ball around. “Hey, you guys,” I shout across the field.

What if he didn’t come up to me on the first day of school, if I never tried to say I liked heroes, if I never transferred schools--would I still be where I am today? I thought he was like the sun. The thick snow masked all the noises around us so all we could hear were each other laughing and talking. Everything hid underneath the freshly fallen snow.

The echoing of shrills and shrieks fill the air, and the wind flowing in my face makes the treacherous line almost worth it. After winding around and around down the mountain, the cart makes a big *SPLASH* in the water at the bottom. I instantly feel my shorts, shoes, and face getting slapped with what felt like a gallon of water. I wanted to go to Splash Mountain eventually, but not yet!

Something about them was so alien, so unfamiliar to anything I had seen before. They didn’t even really look like Shrimp either. They had two tiny claws just barely visible and four thin legs holding up a small, long body ending in a fanned tail, not to different from that of a whale, just noticeably smaller. They had two small black eyes on short stalks and no visible mouth, instead shoveling the algae into a maze of countless mouthparts and appendages, it genuinely baffled me how something so small with a assumingly small brain could control all those parts in perfect unison.

As I walk down to the river side with my sister and our friends, I hear the bubbling murmur of water rushing along with the current. I hear the high-pitched squeal of a small child dipping their toes into the cold water, and the pleasant chirping of birds swooping about the clear blue sky. A smell of summer, and greenery fills my nose as I race my friends down to the riverbank. My feet are poked and prodded by rocks and pebbles as I walk back to the water after taking my shoes off, and I slip in, swallowed up by the cool, clear water.
