The aims of the workshop are to

1. To bring together engineers, scientists and innovators working in this field to strengthen cross-disciplinary networks and open the possibilities of future collaborations

   2. To identify potential user needs that might be a focus for future research and innovation investment

   3. To inform and shape a future update of the EO Technology Strategy for UKSA

In addition to short coffee breaks, there is a longer break of an hour at lunchtime to catch up on emails and calls or develop your network through conversations with others at the event.

The materials generated from the workshop will be shared immediately with those attending and longer term will be used to contribute to the shaping of future research programmes

We will be asking you to contribute to three main discussions:

1. Technology Pipelines - what have been some of our challenges in this field in moving up the Technological Readiness Levels (TRL) levels?

2. What do users hope to see developing from this technology?

3. Where might some of the future direction of this technology take us? What might be some of the gamechangers that could affect our direction of travel?

We have invited some of our participants to take part in "expertise" sessions. This includes a panel discussion on future technologies and to be part of a series of small group "Conversations with End Users"

These sessions will help to shape the future agenda.

I'm the co-director of COMET, the UK Natural Environment Research Council's Centre for the Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes Volcanoes and Tectonics.

I am also co-founder of spinout company SatSense Ltd, which aims to make ground movement data more accessible, particularly for infrastructure owners and managers.

I am a member of the ESA mission advisory group for Hydroterra+, an Earth Explorer 12 candidate mission. Hydroterra+ would be a geosynchronous SAR satellite, offering sub-daily imaging and retrievals of key parameters such as atmospheric water vapour.

Dr Rob Scott is a physicist who has been involved in space since 1980. He worked in academia for UCL’s Mullard Space Science Laboratory, involved initially in image processing and X-ray astronomy. He then moved to the remote sensing group, working on the Along Track Scanning Radiometer for ERS-1, and on a string of radar altimeter missions including ERS 1 & 2, and Envisat.

Rob left UCL in 1997 and joined the Guildford-based consultancy ESYS, where he developed advice-side skills and learnt the commercial aspects of the space industry. He continued his work in Radar Altimetry by project managing UCL's CryoSat software team and also contributed code to the Level 2 processing chains for the mission.

On joining the space team at QinetiQ in 2005, he became the European Space Agency Account Manager, developing extensive contacts in ESA as well as industry, academia, Innovate UK and the Satellite Applications Catapult, and the UK Space Agency (UKSA).

For 5 years, until leaving QinetiQ in mid 2012, Rob was the Technology Programme Director for UKSA’s Centre for Earth Observation Instrumentation, and has held the Chair of the UKspace Space Science and Exploration Committee.

Since forming ScottSpace Limited he has worked under contract to RAL Space and UKSA among others. He will continue to support RAL's role in the new incarnation of CEOI.

Christine is a promoter and proposer of innovative Earth Observation technology and new satellite missions, working extensively with private stakeholders in the space sector. She frequently works also with end-users in operational agencies, government and the commercial sector to support greater understanding and uptake of marine Earth Observation capabilities. Christine is Principal Investigator of the SEASTAR Earth Explorer mission concept, heading an international science team of 70+ scientists and engineers to deliver new high-accuracy wide-swath images of total ocean surface current and wind vectors at 1km resolution.

She is a member of the SWOT science team, PI of the CNES-approved SWOT VORTICES project, and PI of the SWOT-UK project funded by NERC and the UK Space Agency. Christine serves on many national and international Earth Observation advisory boards for the European Space Agency, the UK Space Agency and Copernicus. She currently chairs the International Science Board of the National Centre for Earth Observation. She co-proposed and co-manages the NERC Centre for Doctoral Training for Satellite Data in Environmental Science (SENSE) in partnership with Universities of Leeds, Edinburgh and British Antarctic Survey.

David leads the development of the Met Office’s next-generation observation processing and data assimilation systems. He also leads research into the assimilation of surface-based observations for both global and regional NWP.

One of her current focuses is on development of a novel technique for estimation of snow depth on sea ice, and the European Space Agency (ESA) awarded her the inaugural Konrad Steffen award for a presentation on the early stages of this work. She is now Principal Investigator (PI) of an ESA-funded project developing the Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Altimeter (PoSARA) concept.

Rosie is also the PI for Sea Ice Earth Observation at the Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling, and a champion for EDI and sustainability.

Graduated with a BSc in Electronics Engineering, and with a PhD on Moving Target Indicator Radars  (MTI) (Budapest Technical University: BME).

With considerable research and development experience in Microwave Systems Engineering, Radio Propagation Modeling, Satellite Communication, Remote Sensing and Radar development. Specialising in new technology development previously worked for AT&T, Bell Labs, and Motorola.

Joined the space sector after completing an MSc in Geosciences and Remote Sensing from the University of Edinburgh in 2009. Lead the Multi Spectral Canopy Lidar mission Earth Explorer EE-09 proposal.

Currently leading the development of a new Earth Observation mission concept to measure surface pressure from space using Active Microwave Air-Pressure Sensor (AMAPS). Designed and built a ground-based demonstrator based on Barometric Differential Absorption Radar (BARODAR), funded by CEOI.  Currently building the Air-borne demonstrator for the mission, funded by ESA. I am the PI for BARODAR mission recently proposed for EE-12.

Since 2012 he has been working in the European Space Agency following R&D activities related with RF passive hardware (filter synthesis theory, EM design, ferrite-based components, and high power prediction as well as advanced manufacturing techniques for RF passive hardware). He has also provided support to projects such as the MetOp-SG Scatterometer (particularly for the RF front-end), BIOMASS (high power aspects), and ELECTRA, among others.

He is currently part of the Microwave Instruments Section (EOP-FMM), Future Missions and Instruments Division, where he is working on the early study phases for new microwave remote sensing instruments. He has been involved in missions such as EE11-SEASTAR and EE12-KEYSTONE, in addition to multiple R&D activities for space instruments, airborne demonstrators, and relevant technologies.

In 1980, Alan joined ESA in France as the Radar Engineer for ERS-1 in Phases A and B1, and later became Project Manager of TerraSAR-L at Astrium in 1999.

From 2007 to 2009, Alan was the Mission Systems Engineer in the Phase-0 studies on the SAR missions BIOMASS and CoreH2O at ESA/ESTEC in The Netherlands.

Alan now works with his son, Martin, who is a co-director and also co-inventor of the eureco® EM-bridge™.  The invention, which is patented in 13 countries, eliminates coaxial cable and eases the deployment of structures, e.g. planar array antennas in CubeSats through to BigSats for SAR and SATCOM payloads.

Following a successful co-funded Innovate UK project, and two ESA contracts, the technology is validated to TRL6 for space applications.  The technology is used in a proof-of-concept 1.42GHz transportable/deployable radio telescope (TDRT) in which a planar array of 120 radiating elements form a 5sq.m aperture when deployed. The TDRT is aimed at outreach, university projects and STEM activities, and has been validated the Institute Cosmology and Gravitation (ICG).

A feasibility study of an L-band Mini-SAR, concluded that a planar array could be accommodated and deployed on the International Space Station (ISS).

·        Using the enchantment of funders with space can help get funding/inspire interest (however this is less so when using the earth observation terminology!)

·        Persistence and Grit will probably prevail (but should it require this much effort??)

·        That the UK/Europe is not the place to develop technology quickly

·        Exploitation and Development Roadmap – keep it live and up to date

·        Science Case with good partnership (User – often academic) and Implementer (industry) and use this to construct a two way case.

·        The ESA process when applying to their funding. It has already been discussed with favoured partners BEFORE being advertised. It is not easy for new communities to access. We learnt the need to speak to ESA before the call is announced.

·        TRL – Think Thermal always!
