I grew up in the West. They call it the Lower Bottoms.

Everybody in my neighborhood would always tell me, "This is where you're from." "12th street is your home." I became programmed. And lately, that mentality started feeling like a jail. I feel trapped. Like my entire universe is just one block long.

"When most people think of City birds, they probably think of pigeons, crows, or geese. Birds are notorious for their bad behavior. Stealing your french fries, crowing obnoxiously in your backyard, or turning your local pond into a sewage. These birds are ubiquitous in almost every city. Because of their successful strategy of eating human food scraps. BUT not all city birds are scavengers."

1. community college changed my life
" Last year, I lived through every high school senior’s nightmare: I was rejected from all the colleges I applied to. It’s not that I was a bad student. I had tunnel vision, applying only to selective schools.

I didn’t consider any alternative.
So when I got rejected, I flew into a panic. I thought there was only one path to success, and I wasn’t on it. While all my friends were picking out twin extra-long sheets, I was left wondering what kind of future I could have. "

2. kids need families
"The system has no arteries
The system has no veins
And then we wonder why
The system causes pain

I remember years at a time where I was never referred to by name; just “resident”, “client,” or “you”. I don’t think they even knew my name. For most of my life, where I slept was just “a placement” tied to a case plan and usually a wait-list. Maybe that’s why I have a hard time finding home. These are just a couple of insights about what happens when institutions raise foster children. Group homes, treatment facilities, detention centers, and shelters are no place for children, no replacement for the families we were promised."
