Description of Research Interests:

Background

My current research focuses on identity processes in 'emerging adulthood', a term other scholars have used to refer to a developmental phase between adolescence and adulthood. Drawing upon my background in social theory, I analyze how the experience of 'growing up' has changed as a consequence of broader changes in society, culture and political economy. This research involves intensive interviewing and analysis of autobiographical narratives of young, middle-aged and older adults from varied social backgrounds.

My research of the past two decades has covered a broad range of topics in social theory, including: the social theory of Erving Goffman and Kenneth Burke; psychoanalytical social theory; interaction and inequality; emotions and human rights; feminist social theories of identity; Zygmunt Bauman's theory of gender and sexualities in 'liquid modernity'.

So one article said that specifically amongst middle class students, personality -- agentic personality -- was more impactful than social structures (that excluded social class). Obviously, there are several weaknesses with this study. First it excludes social class, which has been found to be heavily impactful in terms of resources a young adult has at their exposure that influences the growing up process. There is a weakness with the fact that they focused on the middle class however, they did explain why. I have been interested about the impact of personality on success to students and how does this combat the constraints that society creates for growing adults of different socioeconomic statuses. Since their findings put an emphasis on personality of individuals it would be interesting to see if these personalities are a result of their upbringing or if these personality characteristics transcends class and if so, is personality impactful enough as a human capital to combat the lack of resources class status usually brings, and helps working class individuals become successful in the academic realm.

Also look into "Paying for the Party" by Armstrong Hamilton
