I used to think that civics and citizenship learning mainly belonged in HASS subjects, but now I think that meaningful civic connections can be embedded across all learning areas, including science, by helping students explore the social, ethical, and environmental impacts of scientific knowledge and technologies.

I used to think civic was something that would be cool to teach if I was a HASS teacher, now I think I've BEEN teaching civics and now I have the tools do it even more intentionally!

I used to think that democracy could only be applied for HASS. I can see now that training students to be democratic thinkers can be applied in everything subject.

I used to think civil issues and political discussions weren't that interested because it didn't relate to me or what I teach. I now know that it can be linked to any subject and that I had been practising it in my classes without knowing.

Now I think even the smallest pedagogical adjustment or identifying 'observable actions' ca be effect ways to support young people develop as Active and informed citizens :)

I used to see democracy as just a minor part of school life, but now I realize it's so much bigger than I thought. It's really about giving students a voice and making sure everyone's involved. When we include student agency and get everyone's input, we're not just learning about democracy but we are making it apart of our school life. It’s a great way to set a better class culture and socially incorporate all learners.
