Donato Bramate was born in Italy in 1444 to well-to-do farmers. He introduced the High Renaissance style in architecture. He was the main planner for the reconstruction of St. Peter’s Basilica. He was the assistant to a painter who was a central figure in humanism. He was active from the late 1400s to the early 1500s before he passed away on April 11, 1514.

From the worried expression on Christ's face as well as the exhaustion on his face, it is clear that Bramate was able to expertly portray human emotions that evoke a connection between the viewer of the art and Bramate as this is a way to make Christ's story more accessible and understandable to people.

There is shading present in this piece of art, on the pillar behind Christ that brings depth and more realness to the painting. Also, the use of perspective to create a background, mid-ground, and foreground creates a more realistic and in-depth scene. In the background is a city that is shown smaller as it is in the distance, in the midground a window with a vase is shown and in the foreground, Christ is shown tied to a pillar. The realism in this piece makes Christ look anatomically correct and therefore adds to the realness of the picture. These factors contribute to the painting having a greater effect on the viewer as they make it more real which makes it easier for them to believe in the art.
