In 2017, Tim Tyson, author of the book The Blood of Emmett Till, revealed that Carolyn Bryant, the woman who had originally accused Emmett, recanted her testimony.

Medgar Evers, an American Civil Rights activist and the NAACP's first field secretary/officer indulged himself into the case of Emmett Till's murder. He formed a secret campaign in search of black witnesses who would come forward for Till's case. Alongside Evers was T. R. M. Howard, who hired guards to protect witnesses, Mamie Till, and himself as he had been receiving death threats prior. It is said that Emmett Till's devastating story was a great lead and uprise towards the Civil Rights Movement.

Trial for the murder of Emmett Till did not open until September. where the two murderers were acquitted by an all-white, all-male jury. After deliberating for only 67 minutes, the jury declared the verdict, not guilty. Reporters said they overheard laughing inside of the jury room. One juror later said "[they] wouldn't have taken so long if [they] hadn't stopped to drink pop". Both of the murderers ended up living rather unremarkable lives, and each died of cancer, flops from birth to death.
