Read relevant policy docs etc and answer the following:
1. Should there be a minimum unit price?
2. Do you think our night-time economy been revitalised by drinking (or are our towns and cities becoming no-go zones)?
3. Is it ‘safer’ to drink at home?
4. Are units a useful tool to measure levels of drinking?
5. Do you agree with long-term increase duty rates?

Minimum unit cost

People who drink at home are more likely not to acknowledge how many units they are drinking. They are more likely to pour larger measures per drink. The prices that the supermarkets offer for alcohol make it more affordable to drink at home rather than go to the pubs. Even with the new ban on low cost alcohol, a can of super strength of cider can cost as little as 16p. Massively discounted alcohol can be a contributing factor to child abuse, neglect, domestic abuse, family breakdown and social disorders. Young people are being encouraged to buy alcohol as it is currently cheaper for them to do so rather than purchase a cinema ticket. Children are also concerned with the drinking habits of their parents and several calls to child line are regarding this matter.
A minimum unit price would not necessarily prevent people from purchasing the alcohol but could possibly push their families further into poverty. Although the recommendations suggest that this would not be the case.

Should there be a minimum unit price?

Yes. As demonstrated by Canada MUP has been an effective measure of reducing alcohol consumption. Alcohol is currently cheaper than other leisure activities for youths in the UK. Cheap products are the main causes of the majority of alcohol related problems, including; death, disease, domestic violence, child neglect, and child abuse. Reducing affordability has been an effective policy to reduce the negative implications from alcohol in Canada.

Do you think our night-time economy has been revitalised by drinking (or are cities becoming no-go zones)?

Yes, “drinkertainement” and “foodatainment” were major contributors to revitalising the night-time economy from 1980-2005. On the other hand, venues targeting a youth demographic (e.g. weatherspoons) has the deterred older population from going into the city at night. This is due to fear of drunkenness, anti-social behaviour, and violent crime. However, Mark Jayne suggests this is a moral panic as violence has not significantly increased.

Is it safer to drink at home?

No. Drinking at home is less visible and more affordable which increase the amount that can be purchased. This increases the risk of domestic violence andalcohol related disease.

Are units a useful tool to measure levels of drinking?

Age Cymru claims units are confusing and percentages of daily intake would give a clearer definition of a measure.

I think suggesting a safe amount to drink is harmful as it condones alcohol. There should be a message of don’t drink.

Do you agree with long term increase duty rates?

Yes. By increasing the affordability of alcohol fewer people will be able to purchase the product. This will inevitably have a positive impact on health but also the costs associated with alcohol consumption.

Missy

Alcohol consumption within the UK is at an all-time high. However, the cost of the resources needed to contain and contend with the consequences of excessive drinking are high. The alcohol duty will make a fairer contribution to meeting these costs. If there was a reduced duty on alcohol this money would have to be found elsewhere. He duty imposed on alcohol also reduces the affordability of the goods which has been proven to help the problem of excessive drinking.
