Quote Response #1: "It was also unusual for teachers who demanded the very best from their students, who refused to succumb to the notion that there was no reason to challenge them" (155).

Reading this part of the books makes me feel blessed that I live in Massachusetts rather than Texas. While it would be a great high school experience and a lot of fun to watch these games, their education system seems very flawed. The average SAT in Permian at the time of the football team is only a couple hundred points away from what I would expect to get on only one of my sections of the test!

Quote Response #2: "It raised the question of why he was out there at all, since it was determined Boobie was getting surgery after the season. For the team, it was a no-risk situation" (196).

When reading this chapter, I think the author's style and voice when he talks about the players is much like a coach. That being said, the purpose of this tone is to create sympathy for the players. They way he talks about Boobie's situation makes the reader feel bad for him, as there is nothing he can do about what happened. He makes it seem like the team is planning on taking advantage of him, as they say it's a bonus if he plays well and if he gets hurt, they don't really care. This is a cruel thing to say to anyone, let alone a high school kid who is going through the toughest year of his life.

Quote Response #3: "A coin toss, if there wasn't so much riding on it, it would have been laughable. But it wasn't" (254).

This section of the book is meant to build suspense for the reader to the big event. The experience the reader feels during this part of the book is nervousness for the team, as they go through everyone who will be affected by the coin flip and the repercussions of it. Some people include the 3 teams, Coach Gaines, and the coach's wife and daughter. The rules of the coin toss were each coach flips a coin and whichever coin is the odd one out, they wouldn't advance. When it happened, Midland Lee and Permian both flipped heads, and Midland flipped tails. Personally, I had seen the movie, so I knew they made the playoffs, but still, reading the repercussions of what would happen if Permian didn't make it made me a bit tense.

Quote Response #4: "Suits would be filed over it. Hearings would be held over it. Black vs white. City versus suburban. All these issues spilled out as a result of something that seemed shockingly inconsequential: Edward's math grade" (297).

I think this part of the text is placed to make the reader think that Permian's opponent, Dallas Carter, is cheating. This excerpt was taken from a section of the book in which the principal of Dallas Carter fudged the grades of his football players so they could play. Since the author is a Permian graduate, he wants to shine a negative light on the opposing school to make the reader think they cheated.

Quote Response #5: "On the far wall of the office, there was a depth chart that had all the players on little magnets. All the seniors were placed in a neat little pile at the bottom, leaving empty spaces that would be filled with other magnets" (336).

I feel that this part of the text wraps of the book well. I believe that the purpose of ending it like this is to reinforce to the reader that the senior class's careers are over. In the movie, the final scene is the magnet pieces hitting the floor and I feel that symbolizes how cruel Texas HS football really is. They are human chess pieces to the coaches and once their four years are up, they have no use for them.

Differences from the Movie

1. In the movie, Boobie Miles was still considered the star after coming back from his injury. In the book, he is an expendable piece, as the back who filled in for him, Chris Comer, is considered better than Boobie by the coaches.
2. In the movie, the team made it to the State Championship game, while in the book, they lost in the Final Four. This is a big deal because the way Texas HS teams are remembered are whether they made the state title game or not.
3. The details and way the Permian vs Dallas Carter game was played was completely different. The score in the movie was high, while in the book it was low. In the film, it was a tale of two halves, with Carter dominating the first and Permian coming back in the second. In the book, it was heavily contested the whole game. Finally, the locations were different, as in the movie it was the Astrodome, while in the book it was the stadium at the University of Texas.
