Chapter 1- The Teaching Profession and You

The quotes that stood out to me were..
1. "Teaching is more than helping a child master a subject; each classroom is a composite of the anguish and the joy of all its students."
- This quote speaks to me because teachers just don't help students learn a subject, they do so much more and are like students second parents. Teachers go beyond the classroom and teach their students life lessons. This didn't change my actions or thoughts because this is how I feel about teachers and becoming a teacher.
2. "Teachers are born, not made."
- Teachers are born, not made is a strong quote because if a teacher is not passionate about their job their message would not be delivered to the students. When someone loves what they do and are passionate the message is more effective. This quote changed my actions because if I wasn't passionate about becoming a teacher I wouldn't become one.
3. "I touch the future; I teach."
- I love this quote because the students that we teach are the future. If you teach students you are touching the future because you are helping them get one step closer to greatness they are destined for.

Chapter 2 - Different Ways of Learning

1. "Individuals bring different levels of motivation to learning."
- Motivation comes in all shapes and sizes. The only way a person can gain or lower their motivation is all one them. Teachers can encourage students to become more motivated in the work they do but it all relies on the student.
2. " A teacher's challenge is to know their students' interests and goals, and to develop trusting relationships that spark motivation from within."
- I believe this quote because teaching is more than just teaching a lesson, you have to connect with your students on a personal level. If your students do not trust and respect you then they would not learn. this quote changed my thoughts because I need to learn how to get to that level when I become a teacher.
3. "The brain, for example, rather than being fixed, is like a muscle that can be shaped and changed by our experiences."
- I do not believe anyone can fix how you think but I do believe that people can help open your mind to a different idea. Being a teacher or even a student you have to be open for new thoughts and ideas each and everyday. This quote helped me realize this because if you are close minded then you will never be able to teach something to a student.

1. "Many teachers struggle to connect with students whose backgrounds are so different from their own."
- `I don't agree with this quote because teachers should have open minds when it comes to their classroom. I'm not saying they should assume things but they should try to understand that each kid has a different background. This quote makes me want to learn how to always keep an open mind to things/people so that I could fully understand someone.
2. " The racial composition of our nation is changing."
- I love this quote because I love people from different backgrounds. I love how someone could be so different from me in their everyday life and we just have a great connection.
3. "The challenge for educators is to ensure that all our students achieve."
- This is a big challenge but also a challenge that every educator knows about. When I say this is because this is a huge challenge for someone to take on making sure that each and every one of your students learn something. But also this challenge is the reason why teachers teach, they understand this challenge but know they are able to do it.

1. "Economic and social factors are also powerful forces in today's classroom."
- This statement is powerful because these two things can really change a classroom environment. The students attitude can change the whole dynamic of the teaching environment.
2. "Schools create their own cultures, replete with norms, rituals and routines."
- I think this quote is so true because I transferred to many different schools and each were different. Each school has their own rules and the students just adapt to it. Also if you make your classroom a certain way it's going to be different from another teachers classroom.
3. "Teachers with the least experiences and the lowest level of qualifications are assigned to students in the lowest tracks."
- This quote really breaks my heart because I believe the lowest students should have the best teachers. These students need them the most so that they can have the motivation and courage so that they can be the best and greatest of themselves.

1. "The idea of public education is so common place today that it seems difficult to imagine another system."
- I don't agree with this quote because growing up in a Catholic school setting didn't make public school such a common place for education. People need to be able to have an open mind to other things, such as a catholic school or even carter schools.
2. "Efforts to improve public high schools marked one important reform movement; the growth of progressive education signaled another."
- The education system will never be perfect because with time equals growth. I say this because no matter how much we try things just get better and better with time but if the education system wants to get better they have to be on top of their game. They need to make changes when the changes are happening not years later.
3. "We still struggle to create fair schools."
- This quotation is true because they still haven't received the right founding for fair schools. They are still trying to come up strong and prosper for these new fair schools.

1. "Schools should prepare students for analyzing and solving the social problems they will face beyond the classroom."
- I strongly agree with this quote because life happens outside the classroom as well and preparing students can make their life a little more easier.
2. "Students learn effectively through social interactions so schools should plan for substantial social interaction in their curricula."
- Schools normally do not help students with social interactions because within the classroom students usually have to be quite and are not socializing with any of their peers. Social interactions is a very important because its apart of life and its an essential for getting a job and living.
3. "Students who do not want to study to much should not be required to do so."
- I do not agree with this quote because students need to study, studying is a essential for learning the material. Studying helps people enhance themselves with the material given.

1. "Teachers and students find themselves the victims of rising educational expectations but limited educational resources."
- This really got to me because schools are really limited to educational resources and are left there to try to make things work. But then teachers have so much pressure with little resources and high expectations so that the students can succeed. This is really sad because then it looks bad on the teachers rather the the education system in general and nothing changes.
2. "teachers spend about $500 a year buying classroom material."
- It's sad to say that teachers go above and beyond for their classrooms and still do not get the recognition they deserve. Teachers are under paid for their job and on top of that they do no get any funds from the school board for materials for their classroom and have to go out of pocket so that their classroom is at least decent and ready for the school year.
3. " When communities and nations cut back their educational spending, they lose more than they save."
- This is a powerful statement because it happens all the time. Education funds are cut short or just cut off in general and it hurts the students the most. It hurts each and every student, the students with disabilities or students who want extracurricular activities. All of these students suffer.

1. " Courts are regularly asked to draw the line between a teachers personal freedom and the community's right to establish teacher behavior standards."
- I do not believe that a teachers personal life is anyone's business, if their personal life doesn't affect their teaching then it should not matter. People need to worry about the important things in their lives rather the important things in someone else's.
2. "A teacher's freedom of speech often involves gray areas and may not always come out in the teacher's favor."
- This statement honestly makes me upset because being a teacher you are educating students about things but you can not educator or voice your opinion on things that matter to you without you worrying about your job being on the line.
3. "Some teachers use social media tools to improve class discussions build rapport, answer questions about class assignments, and keep students informed about school activities."
- This is a great way to get kids involved because social media is becoming a day to day to and with teachers adapting and making their assignments and posting their lessons online it is helping students more than they know it.

1. "Schools should promote creativity in the arts and develop each students' skills and talents."
- Schools giving students the opportunity to develop their hidden talents is a blessing. Since some students are not fortunate enough to find their talents at home school is the best way so that they can. So this is why I think schools should promote creativity in the arts department.
2. "Schools should teach the nations most important historic events and figures, along with our culture's most influential books, authors, artists and inventors."
- I think this is so true because throughout my high school years I learned the same history stories and the same people for four years. Each year I would just learn one new information about the person. A student should learn new people each year not the same person for all four years.
3. "There's a big difference between schools and education."
- There is a big different between schools and education. Anyone could go to school but depending on the school not everyone is going to receive a good education. This should not be the case everyone should receive a good education no matter what school they attend.

1. "When students daydream, doddle, write notes to each other , talk to their peers about nonacademic topics, simply wait for instructions, they are not involved in engaged time."
- I do not believe that this is true because even with all these distractions students still are able to learn. Students will learn the material even these distractions so therefore they still are using their engaged time.
2. "Good teaching requires a personal connection."
- This my my favorite quote throughout all of these chapters because it's so true. When having a good teacher the personal connection comes right with it. Teachers who open up to students make it easier and the students learn more because the respect is there. When respect is there so is the willingness to understand the concept of the lesson.
3. "Direct teaching can sometimes make it difficult for teachers to engage all students in class discussions."
- I believe this is true because students learn differently and its hard finding a way of teaching that fits all students. Some things would work for some students but not all of them.

1. "What children learn in school today shapes the kind of adults they will become and the kind of society they will help create."
- I believe this because the life lessons that students learning during school can really change how they are. Also teachers have rules throughout each classroom and some rules can really sit with students for the rest of their life and mold them into better people for the future.
2. "Children learn through the formal curriculum made up pf objectives and textbook assignments."
-I don't agree with this statement because students can learn in many different ways. Students are so smart they can learn in multiple ways rather than the old fashion way. Also they like the different ways of learning and understanding materials. With times changes so have the idea of learning materials and students as well as teachers understand this.
3. "Learning in school differs from learning in life in that it is formally organized."
- Learning in school and learning in life is really different. I say they are different because in school the lessons you learn are planed out and are set for each and everyday, rather when in life you never know when you will or how you will receive a life lesson.
