Examples of mirror neurons and social brain in class by EUN Partnership aisbl

Give an example of a classroom situation where mirror neurons participate and another one related to our social brain.
Example: In psychomotor activities when students imitate actions carried out by the teacher.

I think all the activities we do in a class has to do with mirror neurons. When students do some practical work in groups they look at other students in a group and this is connected to mirror neurons. Every time a students is doing some work or skill he looks at us too . My colegue once told me that a good teacher has to be partly an actor too- beaczse our facial expresions, gests and everything we do seamed like acting to us. One of my former students told me also this- when I went to gradtuation exam and had to write donw some answers to biology questions I allways remebmered you saying it and you position in a class and hand gestures and this helped me to solve the questions. This is all mirror neurons.
As for developing empathy this is a normal part of our job too as we teach science and understanding of other peoples actions, needs...

Modeling is a powerfull way of learning - even when we are trying to teach ways of doing things.
Team work is a good way of learning. We learn by watching what others are doing, but also observing the feedback for our own actions. We can feel aprecieted, and that feeling improve our motivation to keep in acion.

I've become aware of mirroring my emotions and readiness for work in the classroom very quickly (social brain). Children always observe the way you enter the classroom, facial expression, the tone of your voice, posture... If the teacher smiles - they'll smile back. Switching roles (understanding someone else's point of view) is a good example.Modelling is often used in classroom ( mirror neurons are fundamental for learning) - teacher demonstrates how some exercises should be done, how to build something(create, make experiment), how to make a presentation, give a speech...

Mirror neurons are involved in learning activities that require movements and performing operations. For instance, I teach my students the song If you are happy / Clap your hands ! -- and they perfrom the action. Thus, the children learn new words by connecting the sounds to a specific movement. They enjoy it and have fun. They smile.
An example of social intelligence- when the teacher frowns upon a student who is being noisy and not paying attention to the explanations of a grammar rule - and the student immediately gets silent, then he shows social intelligence. If the student continues to disturb the learning activity, he proves he is not able to sense when he annoys people around, therefore he may be lacking social intelligence.

Vasilis Kosmidis
My example of mirror neurons activity is actually the lack of it due to wearing masks because of covid pandemic. Level of communication with students of the last two years is poor when compared with the average level of communication i have mentioned through my 25years of experience. Sometimes i think i can hardly recognise them - and they too - if i meet them outside in the street. This affected a lot my approach to them because i teach not only using language but also my body and face exprressions, always trying to get things from their faces. On the other hand an example of our social brain is the observation that students work more efficiently in groups orientated to a subject (the post-classroom group of physics for example) than working alone at home on the same topic.

If we are excited and happy with the teaching I think that the students will do the same thing. Therefore as role models, we should be maximized to motivate students to do great on their learning. The way we are connected to the students will reflect to the teaching process gained in the class. and also will reflect on the way the students engage or connect with their friends in the class. respecting, showing empathy, collaborating with one another is the thing we are expecting them to do in the class. therefore teachers should optimize their roles to achieve those things to create great excellent for students achievement in the future

The Application of Mirror Neurons and a Social Brian in Class

Based on what is known about mirror neurons and the notion of a social brain, the connection between the two could not be anymore fascinating since the behaviors of adults that we see during our childhood and youth can implicitly influence our brains without even actively thinking about it. It is from there that the way educators and parents interact with people whenever children are around is crucial, knowing—although a child would know that such negative social behaviors are unacceptable—a child's and young person's neuroplasticity is more active than those of middle-age and old-age adults. Furthermore, when negative social behaviors are elicited by adults in front of younger individuals and by factoring in John Piaget's theory of cognitive development into the discussion, students anywhere between the preoperational and concrete operational stages can still implicitly acquire socially unwanted behaviors while still struggling to understand it from other people's perspectives. With that being said, since they would still be developing their sense of morality, the reactions experienced by someone experiencing a negative social behavior can be passed on to the observer and those reflected experiences can possibly influence how we view our sense of morality and maturity as we develop towards adulthood.

—Austin Nicholas Dragoș [United Sates of America]
