In present day The Candomblé are in Brazil, and neighboring countries such as Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina and Venezuela. This religion was brought to South America by deported African slaves in the 19th century. The first official temple was founded in the beginning of the 19th century in Salvador. Every person has their own individual "orixa" which controls his or her destiny and acts as a protector. Orixas are ancestors who have been deified, and are a link between the spiritual world and the human world. Exu, is the opposite of Orixas, and is often related to the Christian devil.
Catholic missionaries converted slaves en masse, who kept their religious traditions underground, so still today a figure of Christianity relates to each of the beliefs of the candomblé. For example: Olorun corresponds to Jesus , and Omolu, the god healer, corresponds to San Lazzaro .
