When Steve is in court, it always seems as if he doesn’t know or understand what he has done and why he is there (like amnesia). To me, this looks similar to a dream in which you are confused, not sure of the situation and what’s happening. It is a little “misty”.

For the first time in the story, Steve admits that he only entered the drugstore to look around, and doesn't understand why he should be on trial. So when he he gets arrested by the detectives Williams and Karyl at his home, his mom and Jerry are mildly panicked. When he speaks with miss O'Brien, he thinks that she doesn't believe in his innocence. After Henry's testimony, Bobo admits that he had been part of the robbery with King and that they stealed money and cigarettes, but also that Steve had to give them a signal to enter the drugstore, even if they never talked to him before the murder. O'Brien tries to defend Steve's case because he wasn't involved into giving this signal.
